Re: T420S? can't wait for it? when?!

2011-02-01, 0:54 AM

Intel expects "full volume recovery" in April, with impact on the delivery of mainstream Sandy Bridge laptops and desktop computers likely to measure a few weeks...

In a positive light, this gives Lenovo up to 3 months to test T420/T520 displays with WUXGA/QXGA graphics options for those that need at least as much vertical workspace in an UPgraded laptop.

No news on an expected W520 model's graphics yet.  I may rip off my W500's 1920x1200 lid and transplant it onto my next decades' computing UPgrades.

2 things I wonder about:

1.) Will the Tx20 series get an upgrade to SATA 6GB/s capability, or will it still be 3GB/s? Since only the 3GB/s controller section of the hardware is affected (6GB/s doesn't decrease in speed over time like the 3GB/s can), it'd give hope to an earlier ship date- and if it is 6GB/s, more performance can be obtained from newer SSD's that support that.

And,

2.) Is the whining issue fixed? Y'know, this one?  Please tell us it is...

I hope Lenovo will just go with the 6GB/s from start, why use an older gen link when there is basically  no cost associated with the newer one? Not tham I am afraid I will ever hit the cap on the 3GB/s anyway, but at least it will stay away from the problems with the Intels design.

Maybe someone from Lenovo can help us out with that bit of info, will it be 3 or 6GB/s SATA :)

But you will, if you want to take advantage of that 7.88 second boot time. Solid-state drives can deliver more performance than that 3GB/s link will allow.

I think that it does have 6GB/s, though, considering what they used for that demonstration: a next-gen Intel SSD (which runs on SATA 6GB/s).

But I really hope they fixed that whine.

The T420s I showed at CES does have a SATA3 6GB/s controller, as will many of the new systems this year (ThinkPad Classic and EdgePlus) - but I can't make a blanket statement of support because some of the Edge products or lower cost L/SL-series systems may not.

That said, the Intel 160GB Postville SSD used in the demo was only SATA2 (3GB/s). I did actually try a couple of SATA3 drives in my experiments which did have great throughput (upwards of 400 MB/s for sequential read) but latency/responsiveness is equally critical at boot (lots of smaller I/O). The Intel 160GB SSD provided better boot performance so that's what I used.

I suspect the first gen of SATA3 SSD will not be faster than the best current gen SATA2 SSD. It will take a while for drive manufacturers to work out the kinks, but the potential is there.

Great to hear that the higher-speed controller will be there. I am sure we have all seen that a lot of what gives the impression of 'speed' or 'dragging' in a computer actually has to do with the rate at which data can be drawn from storage or written back down. Being able to upgrade the machine in a year with the latest fastest drive is a great way to feel that rush!

OK guys, seeing as how this thread started with a link to a post on the ThinkPadToday site as Editor and publisher I am going to stick my neck out here and we haven't been wrong over the last few years! :smileyvery-happy:

This is our 'best guess' after having grilled the ThinkPad Engineers as special guests of Lenovo at CES.

Here goes, Sandy Bridge T Series including the T420, T420s and T520 will be available end of February to early March. They will be available with Rapid Drive and EE 2.0 and with an Optimus option which will be a killer graphics combination. (And yes, Sandy Bridge is compatible with Optimus!)

we also predict an similar release date for the ThinkPad x220 and watch out for the stunning ThinkPAD - ThinkSlate which will be a Windows 7 Touch/Pen combination with awesome performance around the middle of the year

Keep abreats of the news at http://www.thinkpadtoday.com and you can also enter to Win A ThinkPad whilst you’re there!

Windows 7 Professional

2011-02-03, 8:44 AM

Does Lenovo plan to install Windows 7 Professional? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit version of the operative system on T520/T420?

Thanks a lot!

if the new T series is using the fast controller, the Intel problem should not apply and there is no delay in the delivery of the new models, right?

Just dreaming... hmmmmm :-)

I'm curious if Lenovo can comment whether the Cougar Point SATA bug will affect the release date of the new Thinkpad line. I check about 10 sites constantly throughout the day hoping to see new information pop up!
