ThinkPad E560 3D Camera - how useful is it?

2016-01-06, 16:16 PM

Hi

I was checking the "ThinkPad E560 with 3D Camera".  It says it has the Intel® RealSense™ 3D camera technology.

The technology looks nice on the website:

http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/realsense-shortrange.html

...but, since I'm not able to put my hands on one of those, how usefull is it ?  Does it rocks? Some cool demo with it will be nice to watch :)

Regards

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

Ok so what did I just post?

These two pictures show a ThinkPad E560 with Intel RealSense 3D camera, using 3DMe software from 3D Systems.

The first picture gives you an idea of the 3D resolution at which the camera sees my face. When I move my head around,  it follows.

The second shot shows that 3D info used to paste an image of my face onto an avatar, in this case me in my Super Moderator outfit :-p.

How useful is it? It reminds me of the first time I played with a Microsoft Kinect - fun but not high enough resolution for accurate 3D measurement yet. One can imagine games, gesture control, and motion detection applications. Quite amazing in a ThinkPad at the value end of the range.

Hope this helps!

Windows Hello! It supports face recognition log in through Windows Hello.

Thanks again for the info.

I think it can be interesting to keep the eyes open for future applications that support that camera. Looks very good !!!
