Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 Q&A

[NOTE:  This message contains a list of questions and answers I put together using a pre-release version of the ThinkPad Yoga 370, (MTM 20FD000015).  Mine came equipped with an Intel i3-7100U CPU,  Samsung 4GB DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM, Samsung 128GB CM871a M.2 SATA SSD and Realtek 802.11ac+BT4 WLAN card, which may or may not resemble final shipping hardware configuration for the unit.  Still, this should not be too different from final hardware and system capabilities.  AG]

ThinkPad Yoga 370 Possible Workarounds

Issue:    Machine ships without a Windows 10 Pro license embedded in firmware.
Solution:  Use product ID key from MSDN to activate Windows 10 Pro.

NOTE:  This was an issue specific to pre-release hardware and will not be present in shipping versions.

Issue:    Screen is extremely dark.
Solution:  Search for “display” in Settings.  Locate Change brightness automatically when lighting changes option at bottom of window and toggle to Off.

Issue:    Windows 10 Pro pre-load does not have Intel Consumer (600p series) NVMe drivers installed.
Solution:  Here is how to install the Intel Consumer NVMe drivers, step-by-step.

  1. Download driver package from https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26224/eng/RSTe%20NVMe%204.5.0.2125.zip
  2. Extract the .ZIP file to a directory to a location you will remember, such as C:\DRIVERS\INTEL\NVME.
  3. Inside the C:\DRIVERS\INTEL\NVME\ directory is a new directory named install.
  4. Open the install directory and run the EXE file, following the instructions on screen.

A reboot may be needed for the changes to take effect.

Issue:    Windows 10 Pro pre-load does not have Intel Data Center (P3100, S3500, etc.) NVMe drivers installed.
Solution:  Here is how to install the Intel Data Center NVMe drivers, step-by-step.

  1. Download driver package from https://downloadmirror.intel.com/26451/eng/1.8.0.1011.zip
  2. Extract the \Driver64 directory to a location you will remember, such as C:\DRIVERS\INTEL\NVME\.
  3. Open Device Manager (filename: DEVMGMT.MSC), right-click on the computer’s name at the top of the window and select Add legacy hardware from the context menu which pops up.
  4. Select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) and click
  5. Select Show All Devices for the hardware type and click Next.
  6. Click the Have Disk button and use the Browse button to navigate to C:\DRIVERS\INTEL\NVME\ (or wherever the drivers were saved), select the inf file and click Open.
  7. Select the Intel(R) Solid-State Drive P3700/P3600/P3520/P3500/750 Series model and click Next.
  8. Continue selecting Next until the Finish button appears.

NOTE#1:  A reboot may be needed for the changes to take effect.

NOTE#2:  This solution is for use when replacing the existing Samsung SATA SSD with an Intel Data Center series NVMe SSD and the latter has not yet been installed.  It allows the device drivers to be loaded onto the system so they will be present when recovery media is created.

Issue:  Recovery media not available for download using the Lenovo Digital Download Tool.
Solution:  Use the Recovery Media Creator (filename: RecoveryDrive.exe) to create recovery media.  8GB+ USB flash drive required.
NOTE:   Recovery media made with this method uses the existing operating system, including device drivers, as the basis for the recovery media.  Because of this, it is recommended that recovery media be made after running Windows Update to update the operating system and Lenovo Companion to update any drivers but before making any further customizations to the system.

Issue:  Micro SDXC card does not eject from Micro SD slot on left side of unit.
Solution:
Use non-metallic object to gently push in on card to cause it to eject.

Issue:  No Ethernet port is present on system
Solution:
Due to thinness of unit, a full-size GbE Ethernet port is not present.  The ThinkPad Yoga 370 uses an Ethernet expansion connector located on the left side of the chassis between the Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3 ports.  The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Ethernet Expansion Cable (FRU 04X6435) is compatible with this port.  If the expansion cable is not available, a USB 3.0 to GbE adapter such as the Lenovo ThinkPad USB 3.0 Ethernet Adapter (FRU 03X6840) can be used, instead.

Issue:  Requirements for M.2 2280 SSD replacement?
Solution:
The ThinkPad Yoga 370 works with both SATA and NVMe M.2 2280 SSDs, however, because of the thinness of the unit, only single-sided M.2 2280 SSDs can be installed, such as the 128GB Samsung CM871a or 256GB Intel 600p Series.

Issue:  Requirements for M.2 2242 slot?
Solution:
Because of the thinnest of the unit, only single-sided M.2 2242 cards can be installed in this slot.

Issue:  Requirements for RAM upgrade?
Solution:
  The ThinkPad Yoga 370 has a single SO-DIMM slot supporting DDR4 memory.  My unit shipped with a Samsung 4GB DDR4-2400 SO-DIMM which I successfully replaced with a Crucial 16GB DDR4-2133 SO-DIMM, P/N: CT16G4SFD8213.

Issue:  Requirements for Wireless LAN (WLAN) upgrade?
Solution:  The wireless LAN (WLAN) card does not use white-listing in the BIOS/UEFI firmware and can be replaced.  I was able to replace the provided Realtek 802.11ac + Bluetooth 4 WLAN card (FRU 01AX711?) with a non-Lenovo Intel Network 8260.NGWMG Wireless-AC 8260 Dual Band 2x2 AC Bluetooth vPro WLAN card bought online without any issues.  The card was identified right away and drivers installed for it under Windows 10 via the Windows Update Catalog.

Issue:    Largest Micro SDXC Card supported?
Solution:  Successfully tested with 128GB Samsung EVO Select and 200GB SanDisk Ultra PLUS Micro SDXC Cards.

If you have any questions about my experiences with the ThinkPad Yoga 370, please ask them, below.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 Q&A

Very good work, Aryeh.

Such Q&A might be more helpful source than the support site solutions section as the latter seems not readable by most customers (me too, BTW, by some reason).

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 Q&A

Hello,

Thanks, Serge!  It's not in any particular order, organized with a table of contents, or hyperlinked within the document to make navigation easy, which is something I like to do with FAQ-type material.  This could migrate into something like that, though.  I'm guessing the official ThinkPad Yoga 370 content will be appearing closer to the device's release.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

P.S.  I'm editing the subject on this reply to your message and yours.  For some reason, it was broken. Smiley Wink

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 Q&A

Nice work!  Thanks!

Did you spend much time with the stock (as-shipped ... may be different in production?) REALTEK 88222BE wifi card before swapping in the Intel unit?  Did you have any issues with it?

I haven't spent much time with the Yoga 370 I have in hand but - it seemed to work fine on my home 5GHz/AC network.  @ the vacation rental we're in now it connects to the 2.4GHz network, but no internet access. The X1 Yoga sitting next to it is fine.

After considerable fiddling I find that setting the wifi card's banwidth to 20MHz only gets things working. Not ideal, but a temporary work-around.

I haven't found an updated driver via Windows Update or Lenovo Companion.  Will keep looking.

thanks and regards,

Z.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 Q&A

Hello,

I used the stock Realtek 88222BE card for about 5 days without any problem before getting the Intel 8260ac.  I didn't note any problems using either the RealTek or the Intel WLAN cards at home (2.4GHz/5GHz) or on an AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot near work (2.4GHz only, I believe).

I usually make recovery media 1st thing but held off waiting to activate Windows first (which still hasn't been done...)

@Tried making media today but it failed every try @ about the time the flash drive filesystem was created.  No useful error message.

I'm running ESET Smart Security ( Of course! And ESET did get installed ASAP! ) and the "shall I scan this new drive" pop-up was breaking the media creation process.  The pop-up doesn't persist on-screen and it was several tries in before I happened to spot it.  Temporarily disabled that feature and we're on our way to media....

Probably not ESET or Yoga 370 specific - and perhaps already common knowledge - but I thought I'd report it here and maybe save some other pilgrim a headache.

Thanks again for the great work,

Z.

Re: Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 370 Q&A

Hello,

I don't have an eGPU to test with, and even if I did, I would be concerned about the fidelity of any information given that the unit which I was given is pre-production hardware.  I don't recall seeing any Thunderbolt-specific software on this ThinkPad, but I'll take a look for it and get a screenshot.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky
