Sneak Peek: First impressions of the Gen2 ThinkPad X1 Tablet

(Disclaimer: Lenovo graciously provided the hardware. All thoughts, words, and pictures [except one], are mine.)

I really love ThinkPad boxes... especially those that contain X1 family products. Smiley Wink

This X1 box contained a pre-production version of the 2nd generation X1 Tablet!

This is one of several X1 machines just announced at CES 2017!

Platform Specifications:

My pre-production sample's specs (where multiple options appear above):

* Intel Core i5 7Y54 (per Intel, previously known as Core M5-7Y54)

* 4GB RAM

* 128GB SATA M.2 SSD

* Intel Dual-band Wireless-AC 8265 + BT 4.2

* Windows 10 Pro x64

First Light & First Desktop!

The 12" 2K 3:2 IPS LCD is crisp and bright.

Two keyboard configurations: Angled & Flat. Typing on both was very nice, feeling solid.

Tablet right side: USB-C (power delivery), USB3.0, speaker, mDP

Tablet, left side: combo audio jack, volume controls, speaker, security opening

Tablet bottom: with and without the add-on module connector "protector" attached. This pre-production sample did not come with modules, so I won't be commenting on them, other than generically.

Keyboard connector: self-aligns and attaches magnetically to the tablet with a firm and satisfying snap!

First impressions:

* Physically, I can't tell that this is a pre-production sample. Fit and finish is spot-on. As expected ThinkPad X1 quality!

* Though running an ultra-low power CPU, the machine is quite snappy.

* The SSD performs quite well, as one would expect with an SATA drive. Production models equipped with NVMe SSDs should be blazing fast.

* Typing on the backlit keyboard was quite nice. In the flat configuration, it was rock-solid. In the angled configuration, I sensed virtually no keyboard flex.

Over the course of the next days and weeks, I'll be putting this X1 machine through its paces! Please post your questions in this thread and I will try to provide answers! As additional information becomes available (hardware manual, etc), I may update/edit this post.

Reminder: My Gen2 X1 Tablet is a pre-production sample. Production machines may differ.

Cheers!

Re: Sneak Peek: First impressions of the Gen2 ThinkPad X1 Tablet

does Gen2 X1 Tablet fix the overheating problem that was consistent with the first Gen products?

So far, my pre-production unit runs without any indication of overheating doing standard kinds of things: surfing, watching video, etc. I'll keep an eye on things and report back if that changes.

Regards.

Re: Sneak Peek: First impressions of the Gen2 ThinkPad X1 Tablet

It is kinda funny. It's the best keyboard accessory for a tablet I've used. Better than Surface Pro, better than the Samsung Galaxy Book 12, and better than the iPad Pro.

AND, It's also better than a lot of laptop keyboards I've used as well. Smiley Very Happy haha

For laptop after the island design it might be before NO.
And still it won't beat the zync keyboard for tablets.
