Chromebook Camera and Mic permission issue

2021-05-28, 19:00 PM

I work for a city school district repairing Chromebooks and we've started to see this issue pop up more and more often recently. It started with only N22 and N23 Chromebooks but I've also seen it on 500e Gen 1s as well as some Dell 3100 2-in-1s. When trying to use the camera or microphone, the device won't recognize the camera at all, even after replacing it with a known working camera and replacing the LVDS cables as well. webcamtests.com says its waiting for permission to access the camera even though camera has been enabled for that site. This happens regardless of who is logged in, even a guest account. Google meets says the camera cannot be found, The camera app says it is currently unavailable, and Microsoft Teams says no available camera found. I've tried looking for answers online but there's so many articles on easier things like how to enable camera permissions for certain apps through settings that I can't find any solutions. Any help would be great.

Factory reset, Powerwash, and a USB wipe have all been tried with no success

Welcome to the Community Forums @ maslindley!

Thanks for posting here!

It would be advisable to get in touch with the Lenovo phone/technical support team for further recommendations towards this concern and to see if there's also a possible hardware concern that may require repairs for the Camera and Mic to work properly again.

You may get their contact details through this link and provide them the device's details (serial number) for them to check its warranty entitlement.

Thanks,

Did you try to update the driver?

Chromebooks bundle all driver updates into their OS updates. Even on the most recent versions of the Chrome OS the problem still persists

So far all the devices that have this issue have expired warranties. Is there a way I can repair it myself (or at least understand what the repair entails)?

Thanks for responding @ maslindley!

You may bring the device instead to any local service providers near your area so that they can also inspect it and see if there's a possible hardware concern with it since the Camera/Mic isn't working still even if a factory reset or Powerwash has been done already.

Make sure to contact them first to inquire about their store's policy when it comes to repairing out of warranty devices.
