Re: Chromebook N22 - t y 5 6 not working after reloading

It is a problem with design. Good luck getting them to admit. Two solutions:

1. We took the keyboard ribbon and rerouted by twisting.

2. Also put a piece of sponge at ribbon bend.

Write whoever sold them to you and tell them you require to contact lenovo critical situations, that is not fair to anyone been left without support for a faulty device that on top of it EVERYONE knows is defective from manufacture.

aside from the keyboards, the bottom plastic is so brittle that just by normal open close little by little the brass nuts come loose then you have a chromebook that is just trashed because the hinges come undone.

Off course they say it's "rough" handling from our part that the hinges are build to last, I dont think so.

They send me 50 bottom plates (suppossely one time) and they ship us keyboards whenever we request them.

we had 400 units and we planned to get another 400 but Lemonovo have proven to be weaker than other units we have seen.

We may buy lenovo again when they come with 3 year extended warranty/free shipping both ways.

I too am having this issue. I've heard or read reports of Lenovo still replacing the keyboards even out-of-warranty because it's such a wide-spread and well know and well documented issue. However support would barely talk to me after they found out mine were out of warranty. Being a school, we make big purchases in the summer and then distribute chromebooks as necessary. As a result, the N22's that we have sat for a while before being put in use. Now I have about 1 or 2 every week that has a keyboard issue. I'm very frustrated by the fact that Lenovo support wouldn't help me, knowing that this issue exists and it's their own design fault.

If anyone knows how or who to contact to get replacements for out of warranty keyboards I'd love to know.

We were in exactly the same situation.  Contact your sales rep who sold you the devices rather than going to Lenovo on your own.  Have documentation of SNs of failed devices and documentation of when those SNs were purchased.  The sales rep should be able to get you in touch with someone higher up in the support structure.   I think it was called the Lenovo Critical Situations Resolution Team.

Call center seemed to be stuck on the "fix one device" mode.  This method got us support for a bigger batch of failed devices.

Hi Gregh3285,

I was able to use the tapemethod and its working. My question is...Is this safe...its packing tape(clear)...does a chromebook get hot enough that this would be an issue?

Thanks in advance, Jen

Re: Chromebook N22 - t y 5 6 not working after reloading

I'm a school principal and have had several devices with this same problem across the school.  We have purchased new keyboards from a 3rd party, as our devices were out of warranty.  My own N22 lost its t and y keys too today.

Weird thing.  The t and y keys work just fine when I turn on the US International Keyboard in the settings. Same keys.  Isn't that weird?  I use US International sometimes to type in Spanish.  I think this workaround indicates this is a software problem, not a hardware problem.

The cable that is damaged is just to the left of the touchpad mouse under the plastic of the keyboard.  This location puts it right where your wrist rests when typing.  I've had student machines that had no function in the t and y.  They show up to me to demonstrate the issue and suddenly the t and y work with hunting and pecking, but as soon as any pressure is applied to the plastic left of the touchpad they stop working again.  A damaged cable can work intermittently, especially when it is just starting to fail.  It would be nice if this were software, but we tried software solutions and did not find a fix.  New keyboard fixes it every time, whether it is t and y or 5 and 6 or one of the several other combinations we've seen.

Are the new keyboard cables bent differently? Where do you get them from?

Never mind.  Must have just been luck.  The problem came back, even with the US International Keyboard settings.  I did try pushing or applying differing pressure on the surface near the touch pad.  That seems to make it occur or un-occur.  I can often make the problem disappear temporarily that way.  I will just buy a replacement keyboard.  I don't think I'll be in the market for more Lenovo machines.  I do enjoy the one I have.  It would have meant a lot if the company would have done something significant about the thousands of customers issues with these.  In this case, I only own about 20 of them.

I have experienced key failure as well. number 2, s, x keys as well as volume and screen dimming keys work sporadically! If I tap on the 2 key hard enough, sometimes they return to work. Very annoying and it seems this is a huge problem with the N22.

What are you doing abut this? I've owned it since June 2016. No more warranty.
