Re: Chromebook N22 - t y 5 6 not working after reloading

2018-05-31, 18:45 PM
We purchased 310 Chromebook N23s in July of 2018.Thus far we have had to send in 4 for warranty repairs, with a 5th on my desk at the moment. These appear to have been isolated defect issues rather than a running pattern of anything specific.

All in all ,this has been a relatively better experience than the N21s (flimsy AC adapter post and socket) and N22s (a smorgasbord, as evidenced by this and other threads here).

Either you mistyped the month / year purchased, or you're a time traveller!  For what it's worth, the biggest recurring issue I've noticed is that the overwhelming majority of the bottom cases ship with, or develop extremely quickly, hairline fractures along the leftmost internal screw mount for the hinges.  It'd be interesting if it turns out you don't have the same issue with yours.

Edit:  Also, the webcams are held together with mostly thoughts and prayers.  Very little force is needed for the hinge, webcam screw mount, or LCD cover screw mounts to just shatter.  Hopefully the environment where you support your Chromebooks is a little tamer than mine, because in over half the cases where the webcam breaks off, the LCD cable becomes severed, shorts out, and begins smoking / melting.  Lenovo has assured us that this doesn't pose a fire risk, which I agree with, except under specific circumstances (i.e. flammable vapor present, electrical problems that allow higher voltages into the webcam's portion of the LCD cable).

To elaborate, I've recorded a max temperature of about 270°F along a burning, severed LCD cable, using an IR thermometer.  I brought some scrap N23 parts home (just last weekend, actually) and attempted to get them into a sustained burn, which I was unable to do at temperatures below 400°F.  At most, the LCD cable will carry a flame for about two seconds at 300° or so (this wasn't a strictly controlled or monitored experiment, mind you) but will always go out.  Obviously, there's a burn risk when this happens, but like I said, probably not a significant fire risk until other variables are introduced.

Has a resolution been found for this problem?  Our district has thousands of Lenovo products and this is a VERY common problem and costly.

Not that I've heard, no. We tried those 3D printed clips that someone created and linked to a few pages back, with mixed results. I thnk we did 6 to test, and only 2 have remained opertational since the rest came back with the same problem.

Between this problem and the weak corners (the upper-left corner of the keyboard, the plastic housng around the brass-coloed bit that the screw screws into splinters easily), the N22 was a masive dud.

I would absolutely agree with you axl917, not only was the N22 a massive dud so was the way that Lenovo handled their engineering faults with this product.

Oh - don't even get me started on the terrible screw housing!! This was a terrible product, and terrible support, and we are a large school district and you can bet we won't be getting Lenovo products again!

I have fixed almost 50 of these.  Problem lies with the ribbon cable of the keyboard.  Take apart the chromebook, have the keyboard still connected with the ribbon cable and straighten out the cable and the keys will work again.  The issue lies in the cable bend,  t y 5 6 keys.  New keyboard replacements have this fixed with a different cable bend supported with black plastic.  To fix the issue straighten the cable and tape it, with electrical tape or painters tape.  This will support the cable so it doesn't pinch.

I have fixed 50 chromebooks with the faulty cable with electrical tape or painters tape. Just tape the bend so it doesn't pinch.

Another helpful tip I have found recently: when un-creasing and shimming the cable at the bend does not work, grasp the keyboard cable at the base (where it first comes out from the keyboard itself) and pull firmly. The cable may be creasing inside there as well.
