Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

That sounds like Lenovo's problem, not mine 😂

Edit:  BY THE NINE DIVINES, IT'S GOT ENGINEERING MODE.  THANK YOU LENOVO!

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

Yep - the updated RMA Shim works great, as far as I can tell!
I still can't test any of our devices that are randomly shutting down, but that's an issue on our end - they've all got developer mode disabled (even though they're supposed to have it enabled when they're in our OU in G-Suite).  Very glad to see that the Shim is working properly.  Hopefully it'll be a help to the others having random shutdowns / other systemboard issues on these devices.

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

Ok well here is my procedure that works...

It might not be 100% correct on the way it is "supposed to be done" but the shim still has issues  . It is better but still fails at points..With zero help from Lenovo

So here you all go......

Remove battery connection to board

Then plug unit in

Factory image will start

Interrupt by pushing

Ctl alt f2

Log in as root

Password test0000

Then type enable_dev_usb_boot

Then reboot

Push ctl u  Load shim

Type I  as in the letter i

Let shim load completely

Run through model and serial input as well as region

Then run as far as "reboot" sequence test then

By turning off machine push power 5 seconds

Reattach battery

Pressing esc +refresh while holding  down then power

Then load image flash drive

Remove flash drive

Let it boot

Run terminal ctl alt arrow right

Type chronos

Type   sudo su

Then cd /

then

/usr/share/vboot/bin/set_gbb_flags.sh 0

shutdown

turn on unit  will say

was last loaded in development mode

rebooting itself then all is good

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

  • Esc+Refresh+Power
  • At "insert drive for recovery" screen, press Ctrl+D
  • Press Space at the prompt to turn OS verification off
  • At "OS verification is off" screen, press Ctrl+D
  • After developer mode is turned on, turn the device off
  • Unplug the battery
  • Turn device on
  • Wait until system boots to login screen / welcome screen
  • Ctrl+Alt+F2 (F2 is the right arrow button)
  • Log in as 'root'
  • Enter the command 'enable_dev_usb_boot'
  • Insert RMA shim
  • Reboot
  • At OS verification screen, press Ctrl+U
  • At options screen, press i
  • After the Factory Test software is loaded and before starting FFT, turn the device off
  • Plug battery in
  • Power device on.  It will boot the Factory Test software and you may begin testing.

No other steps are needed.  You're doing a lot of unnecessary work, and hopefully this helps.

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

Can anyone get the shim or are we stuck with sending them back for the time being?

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

If you're not a Lenovo Authorized Service Center, then you'll have to just send the devices in.  The larger the pool of faulty devices they have to test with, the better chance they'll find the root cause and supply a fix to users.

I've run the factory test software on five devices since the updated RMA Shim became available to download yesterday.  So far, three devices had multiple reboots / failures during the first few tests (where it sets VPD info, updates firmware, etc), and had one or no issues during other tests.  The single failures would pass the same test during a second run.

Two other devices will not finalize, with a cr50 error that I'm still looking in to.

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

Just got an email from Lenovo a couple minutes ago.  Reposting here for visibility.

Attention Service Managers,

Lenovo is investigating a reported issue with the "Shim Updates for Chrome OS - 100e Chromebook, 500e Chromebook".

Lenovo is requesting services to hold all system repair actions that require the "Shim Update" until further notice.

Do not run the Shim process; an update will be provided by 10/23.

Re: Lenovo 100e Chromebook Motherboard issues

Harry, have you seen devices that have blank screen and users say they don't boot.   There is an orange indicator light indicating there is battery life.  If you plug in an external monitor, you get video?  Just curious as we are seeing this.
