BIOS Setting Change

2009-07-24, 14:57 PM

Hi,

I have Q200 desktop with Vista Home Premium 320GB HDD, 1GB RAM.

To my project work, I need to install Red Hat Linux 9. I know it is an older version but I have to install an application within RHL9.

I faced some problems during install particularly the installer was not able to handshake with my CDROM drive.

From one of RHL9 forums, I noted that I needed to change the SATA BIOS settings from "Enhanced" to "Compatible". I did this and RHL9 was installed.

Now I am able to use both Vista and RHL9 as Dual boot.

Even after install, to boot RHL9 I need to make this BIOS settings.

So I have changed the BIOS settings permanently.

My Question:

What is the significance of this SATA setting.

If I make this setting "Compatible", Will I lose any feature or functionality during my work in Vista?

Thanks

R Balaji

Balaji,

I think you are right in terms of compatability mode for vista,it may not work in ither than SATA setting. What application are you trying to use?.

Since CentOS and Fedora share the same Code as Redhat you could also try using Fedora 9 and above for your application.

If you want more information regarding the application compatability you are welcome to join the fedora mailing lists for India,You may get some more answers there at irc://irc.freenode.net/fedora-india
