H50-50 i3-4170 Maximum Memory and Strategies

My H50-50 came with 1x4gb of ram. I have seen people state they can upgrade their H50-50 units with more than 8GB of ram, but it appears they have more powerful processors than what is in mine. The stats on my PC state that it can handle a maximum of 8GB of ram, meaning I will be able to purchase a second 4gb stick. Is 8GB the maximum total ram this CPU can effectively handle? I was under the impression it could handle up to 32GB.

If my unit can handle more than 8GB, does the size of the two sticks need to match in size? Meaning, do I need to toss the 4gb that came with my unit and purchase two 8GB units to get it up to 16gb or can I purchase a 12GB stick (if those even exist) and put it in there for a total of 16GB?

Re: H50-50 i3-4170 Maximum Memory and Strategies

Your specs are here:

http://psref.lenovo.com/Product/Lenovo_H50

Memory 16GB max, PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3L,two 240-pin DIMM sockets *System automatically clocks down for processors with 1333MHz memory controller

[edit.. I added the L].

2 sockets, 8GB in each socket=16GB.

2 sockets, 4GB + 8GB =12GB should work.

They dont sell 12GB sticks.

i-3 4170 processor is probably a special build for a box store, web site.
