H50-55 - Hardware and software questions.

purchased a lenovo machine type 90bg

windows 8.1

the question critical updates

critical updates are turned off

looked at all updates and there are 2 gigs to download

should critcal updates be done and if done can they cause problems

support at lenovo told me not to do it

personally think critical updates are a waste of time

next how do you update drivers

lets assume display drivers there is a exe file there is no read me file

next lenovo web guard what is this program should it be uninstalled.

this computer has a 180 watt power supply  proprietary

burner looks cheap

not sure if it uses a regular hard drive or proprietary

out of curiosity can this machine last a 2 year with 8 hours usage a day

still have a lenovo 8258hbu working well 12 years old xp

find xp is better then 8.1

windows 10 does critical updates automatically no choice

thanks for your help in advance

Re: h50-55

Critical updates from Microsoft are released to address system errors and security flaws in the OS, and if not applied just leave your system open to attacks by malware threats such as backdoors, keyloggers etc., and the occasional system errors and BSOD's, so I cannot fathom why anyone at Lenovo would tell you to leave them off, but if you feel lucky and choose to do so, that is your choice as long as you understand the consequences.

As far as driver updates, you can certainly forgo them, but I would read the readme.txt on the display and network drivers as some actually improve performance, and are the stable version from the manufacturer that have been tested by Lenovo to work on your system.

The 180 watt power supply is sufficient for the hardware installed, but can be upgraded (with an adapter) to a larger one if you choose to nuts on the video card.

Device Manager will give you the model number for the HD and DVD drive which you can Google to get the manufacturer.  Mine came with a Seagate HD drive and a Liteon DVD, both which work just fine, but yours may be from a different manufacturer.

As fare as Web Guard, I do not run it on my system because I run a good antivurus already.

I liked XP too, but windows 8.1 is faster, more secure and with the addition of Classic Shell, it looks just like XP only better.    I upgraded to Windows 10 and really like it, but then I do not fear the updates.     If I really wanted to prevent them, I could just block them using my firewall, but  I just let them roll, and thus far no issues...

Cheers,
