IdeaCenter 720-18ASU 90H1000US (AMD) Internet Card NIC

2020-01-21, 15:05 PM

Hey everyone, questions regarding my wifi internet card.

I've never had a good wifi connection with this computer. I am on the same floor as the router, about 20 feet from it with one door between the router (Asus/T-mobile TM-AC1900 Cellspot) and the computer. I have tested the signal with speedtest with very disappointing results (figure 1 - 5GHz connection, figure 2 - 2.4GHz connection). I have been noticing large speed variations during the day, and because of this I've attached a second NIC (usb PremierTek Realtek RTL881AU 802.11ac 2.0).

Windows 10 will bridge the connections, sometimes with great difficulty, taking 10 minutes or more or even failing to bridge them at all. When Windows 10 does bridge the connections the speeds are very good (figure 3). I will try connecting each NIC to the 2.4GHz channel or the 5GHz, swapping between them to get the best connection but sometimes that doesn't even work. When it does connect and I do get good speeds the connections look like this (figure 5 & 6).

I have done tests to find out if it's the router that's having issues, but the router can connect to my other computers without difficulty while maintaining a, pretty much, constant speed. So I've decided it's this computer. But the question is, is it the NIC or is it Windows 10? Maybe both?

Should I replace the NIC card? This is all very frustrating. Thank you!

Hi rackasaur,

Thanks for reaching out.

You may want to try updating the Wifi adapter for this model.

You can download and install the Intel WiFi Driver for Windows 10 on the Support Site.

Just type in the serial number or Machine Type Model then search. Go to Drivers and Software > Manual Update > Networking: Wireless LAN.

If updating the Wifi driver won't fix it, you may need to replace the NIC.

Hope this helps with your query.

Regards

Thank you so much. One last thing, where is the wifi adapter located? I'm hoping not underneath the beastly graphics card.
