Ideacentre 510-10abr cpu upgrade

Hello,

I've recently inherited a broken 510-10abr, which i got to keep after recovering the data from it.

Running linux on it is a breeze.  Haiku not so much.

I'd like to upgrade the cpu to an eight core ryzen.  It currently has an a10-9700.

This machine is for desktop use only, so i really don't care that much about the graphics performance.

The machine has an 180w PSU, so i don't think there is too much headroom.

Can the VRMs on the board handle a 90+ watt CPU?

Is it possible to upgrade to a ryzen?

Thank you.

Re: Ideacentre 510-10abr cpu upgrade

OK, so with a bit of research, i've been able to find out that the same mobo (AM4MH) is used in the 720 with a ryzen 7 cpu, so ...

If this isn't limited in firmware, and the PSU can take it, i guess it should take an eight core ryzen.

Has anyone tried this?

Does the 720 use the same BIOS file as the 510?  And while systems with Intel processors are always socketed (as far as I know), I've read that some AMD processored systems are soldered (I've not had an AMD system myself.)

As far as the BIOS goes, i would assume not ...

It does seem to be the same hardware, though.  And i have flashed a new bios on it from within linux.  I'm sure i can flash the 720 firmware on it if need be Smiley Happy  No checks, no nothing.  It just writes the firmware to the eeprom.

As far as the CPU is concerned.  I just took the cooler off to have a look and can confirm it is socketed.

If the 720 uses a different, uprated cooler, you may need to source it to handle the higher wattage processor.  (As the fan control is locked, the BIOS expects a fan with a specific airflow curve, and doesn't play well with aftermarket coolers.)

Re: Ideacentre 510-10abr cpu upgrade

It seems lenovo is quite annoying with their bios.

I don't really understand this fan problem, i mean ... cpu gets hot -> spin fan faster ...

Anywho ... i guess i could give it a try.

Do you know the form factor of the PSU by any chance?

Re: Ideacentre 510-10abr cpu upgrade

Coolers for higher wattage processors can have physically larger heatsinks to absorb and dissipate more heat, and higher capacity fans.

If it's not an ATX supply, it's probably a TFX.  Those are easy to identify from photos and measurements.

Re: Ideacentre 510-10abr cpu upgrade

Thanks!

Looks like TFX is what i'm looking for.  Been years since i built a pc, so i'm really not familiar with all these new form factors Smiley Happy

I'll order the CPU in the coming weeks and will post here if it works.
