K230 CPU Upgrade

2009-08-18, 14:52 PM

I want to upgrade my K230 from a E7300 Core 2 Duo to the E8400, in order to take advantage of the Virtualization available in Win 7.  Is this easy?  Can it be done with our motherboard here?   Does this take an advanced degree to pull the old CUP and place the new?

Thanks!!

Tom

Are you sure that your chipset supports the 1333MHz FSB of the E8400? Seeing as how the E7300 operates at 1066MHz FSB, this may be a problem.

Download and run CPU-Z. Go to the mainboard tab. Post the information shown for chipset and southbridge controller.

i will be darned!!! The FSB is too fast for my chipset.  I cancelled the order and replaced with an E7600.  That seems to be the only 1066 FSB CPU with virtualization!

I wonder how many people will figure out they have a processor that won't support WinXP mode in the new Windows 7 OS, which requires virtualization!   Also this means No Virtual PC under Win 7!

Okay - I dropped in an E7600 to replace my E7300 - and am happy to report the whole process took 10 minutes and went flawlessly!!!   The 3.02 clock speed really can be felt (I was at 2.66Mhz).  And finally! Virtualization on the chip - which means I can use Win XP Mode in Windows 7!

Recommended upgrade!

Glad to hear that your upgrade went flawlessly.

We are lucky that Lenovo allows us to enable/disable Intel VT in the BIOS on the IdeaCenter line of computers. This is not the case with the IdeaPad line and I'm very disappointed because of it.
