K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

Runing Windows 8.1 64bit.

On Lenovo solution center, keep show one unknown device in device manager.

It does not show any unknown device even with show hidden devices option turn on.

On USBView, it shows xHCL port 13-14 has General Failure:

[Port13] GeneralFailure

---===>Device Information<===---

ConnectionStatus: GeneralFailure
Current Config Value: 0x00 -> Device Bus Speed: Low
Device Address: 0x00
Open Pipes: 0
*!*ERROR: No open pipes!

===>Device Descriptor<===
*!*ERROR: bLength of 0 incorrect, should be 18
bLength: 0x00
bDescriptorType: 0x00
bcdUSB: 0x0000
bDeviceClass: 0x00
*!*ERROR: Device enumeration failure

Does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks

Re: K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

hi ktmcmo,

As per the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Guide by Lenovo, certain components and their functions might be affected after upgrading the unit to Windows 8.1 (this includes the USB Port).

Just to verify, have you tested both the USB 2.0/3.0 ports using any usb devices (flashdrive, mouse, etc.)? If you see that one port is not functioning, you can try to:

1. uninstall all USB Root Hubs under USBView or Device Manager.

2. Install the Intel Chipset Update Utility.

Intel chipset Driver

     Version: 9.5.10.1658

     Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

3. Reboot the PC and observe.

Regards

Re: K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

install lenovo solution center 2.3.  it masks the unknown device.  it does not say to be window 8.1 supported.

already install all new drivers under support center for 8.1.

uninstall xHCL (USB 3.0 port).  still shows general fail in usbview.

Re: K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

hi ktmcmo,

Are all the USB 2.0/3.0 ports in the front/back part working fine?

Some other steps that you can try:

1. Download and run Nirsoft's USBDeview v2.27 (download here)

2. Create a System Restore point

3. On the USBDeview interface, right click on the USB controller/hub that's giving you the General Failure error and try to disconnect/uninstall or disable the device and observe if you still get the same error on USBView/Lenovo Solutions Center.

 4. If same issue occurs, undo the changes that you have made in Step 3 and make a create a registry backup. On the USBdeview interface, right click again on the USB controller/hub that's giving you the General Failure and choose Open in RegEdit. In the registry, delete the registry key and/or subkey of the failing device and reboot (Windows will automatically re-install the device using the inbox driver).

Note:

Only do Step 4 if you have a backup copy of your files and have created a system restore point / registry backup.

Regards

Re: K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

The front and back usb seem to be working.

Already try use Nirsoft USBDeview.  The general fail still there.

I unplug all usb devices except keyboard and Mouse.  The general error still shows on the ports.

Re: K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

Hello,

Did you resolve this yet?

I am having a similar error report on a Dell XPS 8700 (new) with USB Device Viewer (Microsoft).

All my external USB ports are working; tested and show up as ports on USB Device Viewer.

In USB Device Viewer ...

I have 21 ports listed under the USB xHCI compliant Host Controller.

There is a yellow warning with exclamation mark next to [Port 15} GeneralFailure].

Details (cut and paste):

[Port15] GeneralFailure

---===>Device Information<===---

ConnectionStatus: GeneralFailure
Current Config Value: 0x00 -> Device Bus Speed: Low
Device Address: 0x00
Open Pipes: 0
*!*ERROR: No open pipes!

===>Device Descriptor<===
*!*ERROR: bLength of 0 incorrect, should be 18
bLength: 0x00
bDescriptorType: 0x00
bcdUSB: 0x0000
bDeviceClass: 0x00
*!*ERROR: Device enumeration failure

USB Deview does NOT list any errors.

Device Manager does not show any devices not working.

Running Windows 8 64 bit.

No error reports with PC Check software that came with my PC.

No.
Same message on WIndow 8.0.
It seems that device manager is masking it.

Re: K450 - Unknown Device in Device Manager

Hello,

I did a Windows 7 install and it reports no GeneralFailure! Smiley Happy

Windows 8 did show the error. Smiley Sad But it may be software "bug" related! Smiley Happy

This site:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/c686523a-29af-4f90-b434-9e97fa122bd3/op...

states:

"There is a bug in Windows 8 because of which usbview is not showing correct information for composite devices enumerated downstream of a XHCI controller".
