I recently bought the lenovo H520s for Christmas and didn't realise that the graphics card was integrated (my idiocy is incomprehensible I know!) I am somewhat naive on the subject anyway and was wondering if anybody could give guidance as to whether I can manually upgrade the PC myself / if at all!

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
The Lenovo H520s has a low profile PCI Express x16 ver 2.0 expansion slot where you can add a discrete graphics adapter. You can opt to use an Nvidia GeForce GT 620 1Gb or a AMD Radeon HD 7570 2Gb.
See page 35 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual on how to replace the Graphics Card.
Hope this helps.

I have a similar request. I also brought the H520s and wish to put a graphics card in it. My reasons are that my monitor has a problem with its VGA socket and I wish to use its DVI input, so the only option is a low profile graphics card - or a new monitor but the card is a cheaper option.
You have answered with;
opt to use an Nvidia GeForce GT 620 1Gb or a AMD Radeon HD 7570 2Gb
I looked at a GT620 but the specs say a PSU of 350W is required, the PSU I have in my machine says it is 180W Max! Now I appreciate that the GT620 specs (350W) maybe taking in to account other power draw in the PC.
Further info: The PSU I have says Max 12v current 14A (168W), the card I was going to purchase is an EVGA GT620 and the web says; Minimum of a 350 Watt power supply. (Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 18 Amps.) Maximum Power Draw 49W
So I am somewhat confused - can you please clarify?

If you have the Lenovo H520s with the 180 Watts PSU, you may need to upgrade to a 350 Watts or higher to accommodate the power usage of the discrete graphics adapter. You can get one here:
Hope this helps.

These are powerful GPU's and can definitely work on the Lenovo H520s but you need to consider the following:
1.The H520s only has a PCI-E 2.0 slot and it will not fully utilize the PCI-E 3.0 capability of the GPU
2. The dimensions of the these GPU's are quite big (It might not fit on the chassis since the H520s has a small form factor of 105mm W X 360mm D X 305mm H as listed on this pdf data sheet.
3. The power consumption of these beasts are the following:
Asus HD 7970 - requires a minimum of 550 W PSU (source here)
Nvidia GTX 670 - requires a minimum of 500 W PSU (souce here)
Nvidia GTX 660TI - requires a minimum of 500 W PSU (souce here)
The PSU form factor of the Lenovo H520s is a TFX (70mm X 85mm cutout, length 175mm standard up to 190mm) - you will need to get a good quality TFX 650W PSU or higher to accommodate the GPU's above.
Hope this helps.

thank you much for answer. Could you check my really last inquiry about the next Grafic Apapter? I am not sure if this could be usable: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 660 Ti OC 2 GB GDDR5.
This is a low Profile VGA, but this is not in your recommendation..

The Gigabyte Geforce GTX 660 TI OC2 GB GDD5 as shown on the site is a standard video card which requires a 450 W or greater PSU for it to run smooth. Haven't seen a low profile version of this one yet.
