Re:Lenovo 510A-15ABR & 15ARR - upgrading graphics card

2020-10-10, 4:37 AM

I've just had another thought. I'll check the BIOS next time I boot but in the meantime, is there an option to disable the onboard GPU and reclaim the 2Gb RAM it's using for the system or will that happen automagically on detection of the PCIe video card?

cheers.

As I final follow-up to this thread and a thank you for your advice, I went out on Tuesday and got the MSI 4Gb GTX-1050ti and put it in the PC today. No problems whatsoever and the 2Gb the onboard GPU was using were automagically returned to the system!

MSI 4Gb GTX-1050ti draws its power from the PCIe slot.

All, or the vast majority, of low-profile 75w graphics cards not not require supplemental PCIe power.  (Nor do the majority of full-height 75w cards (not applicable to this system as it cannot physically accommodate one.))

As to why I decided to upgrade my video card, on a whim during semi lock-down and bored out of my skull, I purchased a licence for X-Plane 11.50.  This card makes a HUGE difference over the built-in  graphics! I'm still playing with the simulator settings but don't want to push my luck! So far I'm very pleased!

do you have a 180w or 210w version of the lenovo 510A? I have 180w and im considering the 1050ti also, but I doubt wether 180w is enough.

Did you read the "Solution" on Pg 1?  180w is not enough for GTX 1050, but is for a GT 1030 DDR5.

Ah okay thanks, I was just wondering what PSU user Beerislife had, but now I see he has a 210W supply, so he is indeed able to run a GT 1050ti.  I see the GT 1030 is way less powerfull, and as i'm consdering using it for video editing I prefer the 1050ti. Is it easy to update the PSU. Can I just instal a 400 or 500w PSU?
