Lenovo IdeaCentre Dual Monitor Problem - VGA port to HDMI

2020-08-02, 20:43 PM

I have a Lenovo IdeaCentre 720 with a Radeon R5 340 GPU.  I've had a L24Q-20 monitor since I've had the PC.  I recently bought another L24Q to set up as a dual monitor.  The GPU has a VGA connection in addition to the HDMI, so I purchased a VGA-to-HDMI adapter and connected the monitor with a VGA cable.  The monitor doesn't auto-detect in the display settings, and even after asking the system to detect it, the settings pop up, but there is no picture on the monitor.

I've restarted multiple times.

I've updated the GPU driver, and installed Radeon's control software.  It also allows me to see the second monitor's settings, but nothing I tried will display anything on the monitor.  I thought maybe the VGA portion of the card had something wrong, but the Radeon software clearly labels that second VGA port as part of the 2nd monitor.  So I assume the port is ok on the card.

What else can I try?  I really need this set-up to get fixed for work.  Do I need to purchase some different adapter, etc?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Are you sure your adapter works in the VGA-to-HDMI, as they are uni-directional, and there are many more HDMI-to-VGA adapters.

I honestly didn't know that about the adapters.

So with VGA on the GPU and HDMI on the monitor I would need a HDMI - VGA, as opposed to vice versa?  Or just look for a description that says "multidirectional" basically?

Thanks

After reading closer on what I bought, you are correct.  It's meant to go from HDMI to VGA.  I got in a hurry and didn't read beyond the item description.  I found what I need online, and I'll have to wait for it to arrive.

Thanks for the education.

VGA-to-HDMI -- the direction of the video signal.  If you wish to run your monitor's max resolution (2560 x 1440 QHD), be sure to get one that will go that high, as most adapters will support FHD at max.
