Problem - Upgrade CPU from i3 to i7 IdeaCentre K320 - 4 BEEPS

2021-01-18, 4:30 AM

Hello,

Trying to upgrade my Ideacentre K320's i3 cpu with an i7.  I found matching types (1156) of both i5 and i7 cpus. I replaced and powered up the PC, but it did not boot and simply gave a repeating 4-beep pattern.  This happened with both the replacement i7 and i5, both would result in the 4 beeps, but would work fine when I replaced the original i3 again. Am I missing a step?

Ok, very informative wikipedia page, but does not offer practical help or solution.

Hi Ro680,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The IdeaCentre K320 is on the Intel H57 Express Chipset. Please make sure the CPU replacement you've bought is part of the compatibility list found here.

In the event they are there, then please attach the original i3 and boot into BIOS. Navigate to the EXIT tab and select "Load Default Settings" then "Exit Saving Changes" or "F10". Turn the device off then try one of the replacement processors. If unsuccessful, try turning the device off then reseating the CMOS battery and try again.

Regards

Voithos

I suggest that only the processors listed in the K320 spec pages of the Lenovo PSREF are known to work in this system.  Additionally, Lenovo may have used an uprated cooler on the i5/i7 systems, than those with an i3 and other lower wattage processors.  Monitor the CPU temps before and after a successful upgrade (free HWMonitor.)
