Re: Upgrade ram on Lenovo H50-50 90B70057YS

Hi

I have 4GB of RAM installed and the system is moving very slow.

What would you recommend upgrading to? I use many parallel windows and programs so need something powerful.

Thanks much

Re: Upgrade ram on Lenovo H50-50 90B70057YS

Hi PIanoman111,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I am sure that adding more ram from current 4GB should give more resources specially with your running programs. This machine can support up to 16GB max, PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3, two 240-pin DIMM sockets.

Question may be how much.

As example if you currently reach memory performance with 4GB to 90% memory usage on task manager while using your common apps then 8GB total may be enough. If this goes 100% all the time perhaps consider getting 2 pieces of 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 is better.

Page 74 of the hardware manual shows OEM memory certified for your machine. You are not limited to OEM brands but just stay close to the same specifications all it will work just fine.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

Thanks a lot for the helpful answer!

As you can see, I am a real layman... Can you direct me to a good quality RAM product? I would like to buy two 8GB.

Re: Upgrade ram on Lenovo H50-50 90B70057YS

Hi PIanoman111,

I am not sure for the availability and costing of OEM parts in your location so perhaps you can check this guideline:

How to Look Up and Purchase Accessories, Upgrades, and FRU/CRU Replacement Parts

Other stores and resellers may likewise offer compatible ram aside from OEM memory. 2 pieces x 8GB PC3-12800 1600MHz DDR3 are also offered as kits. In buying 3rd party parts, just stay close to the specs and likewise return options just in case.

Regards

Re: Upgrade ram on Lenovo H50-50 90B70057YS

Take care, there are many varients of this type of ram and you must get the right version to work.

You can find PC3-12800, PC3-12800U, PC3-12800R, PC3-12800S, PC3-12800E only the 1st two will work for you

You will find  DDR3 and DDR3L either will work (working voltage)

You will find 2RX8 and 1RX8 (or similar) defines if double or single sided which would depend on space available on your board

You will find AMD only specified varients (no codes I can find) which will only work if your motherboard is AMD or can support High Density Modules.

Re: Upgrade ram on Lenovo H50-50 90B70057YS

I recommend Crucial and Kingston memory for guaranteed 100% compatible memory upgrades for less than from Lenovo, search on your specific model number.  I suggest you buy one 8 GB, and see how it runs with the existing 4 GB for a total of 12 GB, which is sufficient for many applications.  If need be, you can replace the 4 GB with 8 GB down the road if 12 is still tight.

Download and run 2 or more passes of 'MemTest86' whenever adding memory.
