WinXP on 3000 K100 57068352 ???

2008-05-19, 20:42 PM
I need a DEFINITIVE answer on whether or not the 3000 Series K100 can be downgraded from Vista Premium to XP Pro

I've searched, read, re-searched and re-read... and am not finding the answers I'm looking for.  I'm not interested in Lenovo's semi-retarded approach to "Identifying my System" even their semi-retarded support reps can't understand that a serial # is a serial #.

Lenovo 3000 K100 57068352 (NOT the 57061330)
S/N: SSxxxxxxxx

Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 SocketLGA775
3GB DDR2
500GB SATA
SATA DVDRW
TV Tuner
Gigabit LAN
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
Windows Vista Home Premium

I need a simple yes or no answer for starters.  After that hopefully someone can let me know which off-site, buried, iron-clad FTP server I can visit to get the correct WinXP drivers for this machine.  I have tried downloading the "Vista Drivers" from here: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/lenovo/Drivers/list.aspx?ContentID=28 and was recieving such poor download speeds I gave up.  Every other site on the planet was fine, but customsupport.slow-novo.com was screaming along at 4kb/s.  Grr!

So far, I'm NOT impressed by this machine, or Lenovo's take on "supporting it".  It was abhorrid when I spoke with them, the moment I mentioned that I was looking for XP drivers, the reps' voice changed drastically, like I had just ran over his firstborn with my car. "Oh. Well we don't want you to do thaaaat...."

Give me a break.

So far, dis-satisfied... hoping for a solution!!!

Moderator Note; Serial Number edited for users own protection. FYI Admin & Lenovo employees will be able to see the s/n in the edit history.

Re: WinXP on 3000 K100 57068352 ???

After alot of discussion with Lenovo Tech Support today, I have made some discoveries.
  1. This machine comes shipped with Vista Home Premium.
  2. This machine does NOT have WinXP drivers available. PERIOD.
  3. Lenovo will NOT be making or developing WinXP drivers. PERIOD.

So with all the bells and whistles this machine has, it is for HOME users ONLY.  Having an IR remote, and tuner card are all well and good, but an on-board video card is a big mistake for any media-center.

Furthermore, the coveted "speedial" on the front of this machine is a complete GIMMICK.  I reviewed the BIOS system health while turning the dial, no change in fan RPM.  I reviewed the fan/cpu voltages with SpeedFan (great utility) and saw NO change in voltages when switching between Auto, Turbo and Cool.  GIMMICK all the way.

Vista Home Premium does NOT support the ability to join a domain, my biggest hurdle, as it WAS going to be used in a networked environment.  Vista Business and Ultimate are the only versions that support domain joining.

All-in-all, the first agent I spoke with @ Lenovo really stepped up, finding the machine in their systems proved difficult, because it does not follow their standard format (#### - ABC).  After reading the Serial #, BIOS info, even the long UPC code from the back, the agent was determined to find the machine in their systems.  Ultimately, I was soft-transferred to a department working exclusively with the 3000 series desktops.

This is where the lippin' started.  This machine was NOT supported under WinXP, even though it was manufactured in 01-05-2008.  I had a discussion that if I purchased a Lenovo ThinkPad X-series, pre-loaded with Vista, I could downgrade it to XP with no problems at all.  Even one that was manufactured last year (2007).  I didn't recieve a straight answer as to the WHY of their non-compliance...

At the end of the call, I was sales-pitched to extend my warranty from 1-yr to 3yrs....  For a small fee of $179.00. I don't think so, Lenovo.  Thanks for coming out.

I will never be buying a K-series 3000 machine after this headache.  The J-series 3000s downgrade just fine to XP.

I don't get it.

Fin.

I have searched, there is no definitive answer that I have found.  "I think" is not an answer to my question.  Dual-boot is not what I'm looking for.

To allow XP to install you have to go into the bios (del or F1 during Lenovo screen).

Go to Device Menu, ATA Drives Setup, and change the AHCI setting to IDE.

As far as operating in IDE mode vs AHCI mode, AHCI is the latest technology and is supposed to be faster, specifically with multiple application drive access. From what I read though, the hassle to get the drivers to work (assuming you could even find them) is not really worth it, unless you have them during the first install using F6.

Believe it or not I was able to find XP drivers for this machine, i'm actually using the XP SP3 right now with my lenovo with all the drivers installed, including the video one.
I brought my machine back to the store where i purchased it to return it and a tech promised to me that he will be able to find the drivers for me for the XP as long as i keep it and believe it or not he actually did.
The trick is not to look for the drivers at the Lenovo website but actually at the manufacturers website, which in my case is INTEL
He was able to find all the drivers for me except for the vista remote media center which i didn't need anyways. He saved them all to my desktop upon request.
If anyone needs help with these drivers i can upload them somewhere, i believe they all total up to about 100mb

Hope this helps :D

thanks alot geroin for the share. you saved my life. I was pulling my hair out for a few days trying to find the correct XP drivers for Lenovo 3000 K100. Originally I had given up and said to myself, "whatever, i'll just have to use Vista im sure i'll get used to it." but man was i wrong. Vista sucks balls. it  annoyed the f*#$ outta me. I was so close in returning the PC for a refund until i found this forum. Too bad there are no drivers for the Media Center remote. thanks.
