Lenovo H50-55 Upgrade Graphics card.

I have a Lenovo H50-55 (AMD) dekstop with a built into the motherboard graphics card.  I want to install a higher end graphics card into the PCI express slot.  I have upgraded the power supply to a 500 watt PSU and added 8GB of ram for a total of 16.  I have two graphics cards that I already have and I have tried:  a Galaxy Nvidia GeForce 210 1GB DDR2 card; and a Zotac 9400GT 1 GB 128 BIT DDR2 card.  In both cases after I install the card there is no video either through the unit's built-in ports or the new card's ports.  I have tried resetting the BIOS to AGD or PEG (the only available settings besides auto) with no result.  I do not see an option to bypass the motherboard's video ports in the setup.  Any advice on how to get a new video card working would be appreciated.  The two cards I am using are older so is it that I need a newer card?  Thank you

Re: Lenovo H50-55 Upgrade Graphics card.

Little late to this conversation as I just bought a H50-55 myself. I purchased the AMD A10-7800 version with the R7 intergrated graphics and 12GB of ram. I use to game on my other PC but mostly just due console now. I purchased this computer just as a fill in since my other was about to die. I wasn't going to upgrade anything but then got the bug. I opened up mine and noticed there was not a lot of room and that the power supply was only 180 watts!!!!! So here is what I have done to mine so far with no issues.

I pulled out the power supply and added a Corsair CX 750M (80 Bronze). It fit I just had to remove the two small black cushions they use to buffer the original power supply. I also had to buy a 24pin to 14 pin adapter. Works great.

I then decided to put the full capacity ram in it and picked up some PNY 8GB x2 giving it the full 16. I know not huge difference over the 12 but figured what the hell.

Now to the graphics card. I originally purchased the R7 240 and installed it (it was cheap and the size of it was a perfect fit due to the case size and room to work). I disabled the intergarated R7 but after installing the R7 240 when I looked at adapters it said R7 + R7 240. I guess they were working together. I really wasn't happy and picked up a PNY Nividia GTX 950 OC. This card is prett big at about 10 inches long and I knew there would be issues getting it to fit. Easy fix though. I just moved the hard drive from the lower part of the computer case to the next bay up (there is extra slot) and then there was plenty of room.

So far super happy and my Benmark score went from 8,579 to 20,456. The computer is way more snappy now also and seems to open and function way smoother. Hope this helps anyone thinking about upgrading.

Hi! after reading your upgrades to yours I am also wanting to upgrade mine and I have the AMD A10-7800 version with the R7 integrated graphics as well and 12GB of ram. Since I am on a budget, I want to know if I can get a pretty decent graphic card that can run games very well for a cheap price. Also want to know if I can use my old power supply from my old computer to this one. It is an Ultra 550W ATX

Re: Lenovo H50-55 Upgrade Graphics card.

It's not so much the capacity of the PS, but more its physical size. The Corsair CX series is a slightly smaller PS, and fit my H50-55 with no modifications at all. I bought this one:

along with this 24-to-14 pin adapter:

I put a Nvidia GTX750 card in mine, and noticed a much better gaming experience than with the stock graphics.

HTH!

Hi did you have to update bios or anything ? I have just ordered the same graphics card as you ( PNY NVIDIA GTX 950 2 GB ) I have same model PC. I just didn't want to update bios if I don't have to.

Thanks in advance Smiley Happy

No, I didn't have to update the BIOS to install the video card. I did get a larger power supply, though- a Corsair CX 600.

Re: Lenovo H50-55 Upgrade Graphics card.

A 450 should be fine. Minimum requirements say 300w :-)

Re: Lenovo H50-55 Upgrade Graphics card.

To anyone else thinking to upgade using the stock PSU, I was going to add graphics card and SSD, but when I realized the stock unit was only 180 watts, canceled the graphics and went with the SSD,  assuming 180 would be sufficient. It was for about 2 weeks, then died. I would definitely recommend a PSU upgrade before adding anything on this machine.
