Lenovo K320-30192GU slow USB data transfer rates

2011-01-10, 5:46 AM

Hello,

A couple of days ago I purchased a Lenovo K320-30192GU computer.  I had tested most of it's components from the first day to see if they are working properly.  Everything seemed fine until I started to use USB flash drives.  I own four USB flash drives that I had purchased for use on an older Windows XP computer.  When I first used a USB flash drive (4 gigabyte capacity) it copied data from the computer quickly.  I had since installed software and my scanner but I have also noticed a strange situation using USB flash drives.  The flash drive I had originally used to copy files now started to copy some files quickly and others very slowly.

I decided to restore the computer back to the original factory state.  I then installed the same files into the computer to test the USB flash drive and it copied all of the files quickly.  This time around I did not install my scanner all I did was uninstall the pre-installed antivirus software and then install my software.  I tested the USB flash drive and sure enough it copied some files quickly and others incredibly slow.

My computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed.  I purchased a Windows 7 compatible flash drive (4 gigabyte capacity) that is supposed to have faster transferring and copying speeds.  I tested the new USB flash drive with the files and it copied some files quickly but others painfully slow.  I tested the new USB flash drive with the same files on my older WIndows XP computer and it copied all of the files quickly.

I am at a complete loss about this situation.  The USB ports on my computer do work they transfer data into the computer quickly from my digital camera, digital camcorder, USB flash drives and MP3 player.  When the computer was restored to the original factory state all of my USB flash drives copied data quickly.  The software I use is clean of malware and viruses it works very well on my older Windows XP computer and my new Lenovo computer.  What I do know is that when my USB flash drives copy data slowly the transfer speed rate is very low or Windows just sits at calculating.  In the end even the files that are being copied very slowly to the USB flash drive do end up being copied.  I don't know if this is a hardware issue or a Windows 7 issue.  Can anyone please give me any advice on this issue?

Thank You

Hello mate,

Antivirus check the files in the same time you transfer them to see if they are safe. It should be the problem.

It might have an option in your antivirus software.

Just another idea,

The indexing service could slow down the process under win 7 you should deactivate that as well.

Control Panel>System and security>Administrative tools>Services. Click Windows search service>startup type=disabled.

Vince69, your advice about checking to see if the antivirus software was causing my problem was right.  Indeed it was my antivirus software that was causing some files to transfer slowly into my USB flash drives.  I had to disable the antivirus program completely.  At that point I tested the USB flash drive all of my files were copied quickly even those which had  previously been slow before.  The antivirus I am using usually has program upgrades set to automatic but this time without my knowledge it was set to manual.  When I disabled the antivirus software I also noticed there was a program update.  After testing the problem using your advice I then later allowed the antivirus upgrade.  After the antivirus upgrade was complete my USB flash drive issue had been solved.  I had been trying to solve this issue a for quite a while but nothing was working.  I want to thank you for helping me your advice solved my issue.
