720S-13ARR: updating bios to fails (6KCN29WW to 6KCN38WW)

2018-05-25, 18:26 PM

Hello!

I own a 720S-13ARR (running Win 10 Pro x64 1803). The installed bios is 6KCN29WW.

When trying to install the new bios 6KCN38WW (released today) I get a message telling me "Your onboard bios is for OS version 15063 only, can't update to current bios." and the process stops.

What's the problem?

Thanks!

Moriarty

6KCN38WW has destroyed several machines including mine.  Lenovo service center cound not re-flash and needed to replace the entire motherboard

I thought 37WW bricked the machines and 38WW is the corrected re-release?!

Anyway: In the German forum I have received the crucial hint (cited from the release notes of 38WW):

Due to security reason if your current system BIOS is less than or equal to v29 that will not support update BIOS to V38, and will be keep BIOS V29 awlays which shipment with RS2 preload.

Question remains however, whether the "old" machines preloaded with v27-v29 will also receive future bios updates or will always stay on v29 as stated there (which would be very disappointing for my three month old machine).

Greetings, Moriarty

Yes I was wrong... the 37ww bios bricked my machine.  I think the bigger problem is that is appears like there is no way to go beyond the 29ww bios!

I have to turn off Hardware Acceleration in Chrome to fix Youtube problem but it just felt like temporary fix for me.

Im just wondering if any lenovo staff is actually reading this?..or they just let gone be bygone.

Regarding video problems I installed latest drivers for Ryzen Desktop (via Device manager -> Update driver).

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12782/amd-releases-unified-graphics-driver-for-dgpus-and-raven-ridge

There is also an AMD driver cleaning tool included which deleted all remaining drivers before installing the new one. Since I did this video playback works fine without problems also in Windows 10/1803. Note: AMD config tool wil be issing/not working. Nevertheless the BIOS of a new notebook being locked to an old BIOS ver. 29 is really a mess.

Hope this information is helpful.

Yeah, but considering that its intended for Desktops and im sure Lenovo made some modifications to it for the notebook, is that really a great idea? Er, maybe i should ask, what has the impact been on performance, stability, and battery life?

Yes, you're absolutely right. This bears some risk so I would not directly recommend this for general usage. Nevertheless it shows that the problem is more about the graphic driver than the bios. So hopefully AMD/Lenovo will bring the adapted mobile version of the new driver for the 720s-13arr. And from my personal experience up to now the new driver works fine and the playback issues and random blue screens have gone. I had no crashes since installing the new driver. I tested with Amazon prime, Netflix, YouTube and VLC, also with parallel video playback from all four sources. I saw smooth feedback with no hickups. From my point this is a positive indication.

Battery life seems to be unchanged but I did no battery test explicitly yet.
