Anyone have touch screen issues with 300e (Chromebook)?

2018-05-03, 19:00 PM

I bought a Lenovo 300e Chomebook but ended up returning it. I had the "Ghost Touching" issue the first day I got it and it occured randomly throughout my brief use. I also had instances where certain areas of the screen would not respond to touch at all (I had to use the mouse).  The problems never happened right away but would appear after 15 or more minutes of continuous use.

Has anyone else had this problem or any other type with the 300e? I've only bought Apple computers for the last 10 years and this is the first time I ventured out and tried a Chromebook. I really like this computer and want to give it another shot but having these problems right out of the gate really concern me.  :smileysad:

I just contact Lenovo chat with this issue myself.  We're seeing it on a 300 and 500.

I ended up exchanging mine for a new one and I haven't had the issue since. The first one must've been part of a bad batch.

I have purchased 130 of these for our school, and so far I've had to send in 3 of them with this exact issue. If I open up a site like sketch.io/sketchpad and leave it for a few hours, I can see that there have been several hundred screen taps when it's been sitting idle.

I've tried cleanig the screen and powerwashing them which does seem to reduce the frequency, but in the end I sent them in for repair since we've had them for less than 60 days old. In fact, 2 of the 3 did this right out of the box. I haven't received them back yet, but it sounds like they are waiting for parts which leaves me to believe it's a hardware issue with the touchscreen.

I work for a school district that has purchased over 1300 of the 300e units and currently have approx 35 and counting units heading in for warranty service. The support person I spoke with stated that they had not been made aware of this issue

Ok, I'm up to 7 now out of our 130 with this issue. I've gotten one back from repair and it has the same issue despite the repair order listing a replaced part. I can't be sure, but it seems like the spots are in the same places as before.

Other devices with this issue seem to highlight text on the screen and move it around, which seems like the touches are registering so close to eachother in time that the OS interprets it as a drag instead of two separate taps.

This seems to me to be a touchscreen issue and not a trackpad issue because I've seen the blue circle that is sometimes apparant when touching the screen, and the mouse cursor will not change locations when this happens.

Just trying to add more data points to this thread in case anyone else is experiencing similar issues.

Re: Anyone have touch screen issues with 300e (Chromebook)?

We have been going back and forth with Lenovo since August through our vendor UDT for the same issue. We have 60 machines out of 278 that have the screen issue where it appears there are touches occurring on the screen making the Chromebook useless.  We have sent the Chromebooks to UDT to have a "special" firmware uploaded that was provided by Lenovo which did not work.  Lenovo wanted us to send 15 at a time to North Carolina so they can upload the firmware in a "controlled environment". I consented with the stipulation that if this does not work, they have to replace the units.  I received a call Friday stating that the firmware did not work.  I told my rep to send replacements.  Ten minutes later, all units were miraculously working and are arriving on Monday.  Supposedly, the firmware fix is in the latest version of Google OS 70.  Unfortunately, I don't belive Lenovo knows what the issue is and more importantly, does not care about education.  To have 30% of our middle school 1 to 1 program out of commission because the company is too cheap to replace broken units off the assembly line is unacceptable.  Lenovo stated they would not send new units because "they could be bad!" Apparently, there is not quality assurance or control with a statement like that.

Lenovo, if you are listening to ANY of these forums, this is legit.  Out of a batch of 80 300e Chrombebooks we've purchased, at least 4 have shown this issue.  Do not turn a blind eye and hope it goes away, unless you want your customers to go elsewhere.  I have been impressed by the durability and build of these CB's, but if this is how customer support and relations are, you're not doing your company a favor.

@Farnsworth1  Wow! 60 out of 278 is huge. I hope your situation gets resolved soon. I know how frustrating this is with only 5%, but over 20% will kill productivity.

Au update on my end, of the 7 that I've sent in for service for this issue, I've gotten 6 back (7th is on the way) with a brand new screen; I even got to peel the plastic off myself. I've let these sit for several days and no ghost touches, so it seems like there is a hardware issue with some of these screens that QC didn't catch. Worth noting is that we had purchased an additional warranty through Lenovo on these units, so maybe they are more willing to replace parts for us in that case.

It seems unlikley that ChromeOS v70 solves this issue, but that would be great news for both customers and Lenovo if it were the case. The ability to use a pencil as a stylus on these screens is really great, but if it comes with issues like this I think we'll have to choose a different model next time around.

@bhrd We have a three year extended warranty and have asked several times for the units to be replaced. What really bothers me, is we reported this back in August and Lenovo is still sending these out to schools.  According to them, the fix is in Chrome OS 70 which means they have been knowingly shipping bad product for months.  We had issues with the N21's, and N22's right from the factory as well.  This may be our last time working with Lenovo if things do not improve quickly.

Just an update. I received the 15 back from the "controlled environment" in North Carolina that are supposed to be fixed. First one out of the box had screen blanking and shifting, so their solution did not work(not surprised). I plan to call Google support and ask if they can show me where to find that Lenovo included code in this update to fix the screen issue.

It is outrage, I am wondering if we continue buying Lenovo chromebooks next academic year if this terrible service is happening. Bought 50 units for our school in Panama and now it is costing more money to ship them to the US to be fix under warranty than buying new ones. When Panama is going to be able to fix chromebooks under warranty, all other non-chromebooks models are covered?

@Farnsworth1

I found this article that suggests that v70 does indeed fix this issue: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht507553

I will also note that I haven't encountered this issue since October 2018 - Until now. I had another 300e using ChromeOS version 71 that had these same symptoms.

Is anyone else continuing to run into this issue after upgrading to ChromeOS v70?

Unfortunately, I've sent in 16 devices since the last post in February with the same ghost touch issue, so it seems that ChromeOS v71 did not solve the issue. At this point I just have to say to the support representative that they have "the ghost touch issue" and they seem to know what I'm talking about. Every one I've sent in has come back with a new screen as a solution, so I believe it to be a hardware issue. I haven't had any of the 23 repaired devices experiece the ghost touch issue again. I'm at 18% fail rate in the 16 months these have been in use.
