Caddy for Lenovo 320-15IKB

2017-10-19, 18:06 PM

Hello. I am going to buy Lenovo 320-15IKB with no optical drive. Also I would like to change the standart HDD for SSD and use this HDD as a second hard drive. Therefore, I would like to ask if i may add the HDD using caddy adapter even if there is no optical drive in the model.

There is no problem with opening laptop, but i would like to ensure that the space of DVD is empty and could be used.

In the second place, I am not sure if there are all cable connections in there. I mean if there is a SATA connector which corresponds to DVD drive in other models.

Another possible problem is the way to fix caddy to the motherboard. Normally it can be fixed by a metal part and a screw form the optical drive. But by not having dvd rom, would it be possible? In the case of having the hole, where may I get the metal part and the screws needed?

And finally, would it fit using a standart 9.0 mm caddy? Or the only option is to use my HDD as an external hard?

Thanks in advance

PS. And another little question about RAM-memory. Would those models work well in it? Are they compatible? Which one would be better? (I believe that HyperX sue to CL13)

1. HyperX Impact HX421S13IB/8 https://www.inet.se/files/pdf/5310120_0.pdf

2. Kingston KCP421SS8/8

Have you tried to pull the plastic which you have in place of DVD drive? You would find that you may put an additional drive there with no need of getting any caddy drive. The only problem is that there is a circuit missing, which should have connected the secound drive to the laptop. I found out that this circuits fits perfectly: OWZ-V3. It says that this model is only suitable for Idealpad 310, but I may asure that it does its job in idealpad 320 too. I got it here:

Check out this website:

They have many Lenovo models that have hard drive sleds to replace a DVD with.

There is a Slimline SATA connector for an optional DVD-drive, where you can also mount a caddy.
I bought an ULTRACADDY 2nd HDD SSD Hard Drive Caddy for Lenovo Ideapad 320 with Faceplate Gray: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07956SXMC/ref=pe_3187911_189395841_TE_3p_dp_1

The built-in sledge can also hold a 2.5 drive, though the is no circuit for SATA to Slimline SATA.
If you can find an adapter, that will fit in the limited space, that is indeed a possibility.
I think, though, that the slege might be a bit shaky (noisy), if you mount a HDD.

As for RAM, you have to be aware, that the system will adapt to the slowest RAM-module.
I believe the soldered RAM module is 2133MHz, CL15, 15, 15, 36. It will make no sense spending extra money purchasing RAM faster than the soldered RAM module.

Lenovo makes some fine machines, but they really should work on offering a better variety of extras. Especially when there is an obvious large slot for ekspansions. There could also be extra cooling, USB HUB, card readers etc. I rathest by from Lenovo.

Re:Caddy for Lenovo 320-15IKB

I had seen some videos on YouTube showing replacing an HDD by an SSD and also some videos introducing new SSD in the DVD slot by using caddy.

In one of the videos, only SSD was compatible in caddy and not the HDD.

I wanted to ask if we can also use HDD in the caddy or is it just limited to an SDD  (in Ideapad 320).

Thanks in advance.
