Flex 15 replace hard drive

2014-01-25, 4:11 AM

I'm trying to put an SSD in my Flex 15 in place of the hybird that's on there now.  I can't seem to get the bottom panel off.  I removed all the screws all the way around, however the panel will only pry off up to the hinges where it connects to the screen.  I pryed up pretty hard, definitely hard enough to pop any pins that might be holding it.  I'm afraid to force it as it's plastic, am I missing something simple?

Have you had a look at the service manual?

Thanks that helped.  For future google searches, you have to pry off the two rubber legs, there are two more screws underneath them.

Glad to hear it! You should post some photos of the teardown and let us know how it works out!

First remove every visible screw on the bottom of the laptop.  Next, peel off the two rubber legs with a flat head screw driver.  Don't worry, the legs are held in partly by glue, and partly by some rubber "pins", so they will secure back to the laptop after you're done.  Here's a pic of the "rubber legs" I'm talking about:

Once those rubber legs are remove, unscrew the final two final two screws that are underneath them and the back will just fall off on its own.  You shouldn't need to apply much if any force.

Yes it made a night and day difference, I would definitely do it.

Search "Crucial M500 120GB SATA 2.5-Inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal Solid State Drive CT120M500SSD1" on Google, I got it from Amazon.

I didn't image it, I just installed Windows right to it. Although I did have to change a setting in the bios, I believe one related to UEFI and allowing legacy boot mode.

thanks for the prompt reply... once the screws are all removed, do you have to pry the back off, is there a trick to that, or does it slide off like a 17 HP?  I've had trouble figuring out the secret code on some pc's.  I assume your battery life improved with the ssd?

Is the 9.5MM adapater necessary or will any 7mm drive work?

Re: Flex 15 replace hard drive

Hi - can anyone confirm that the Sata III (6gb/s) interface for the Crucial SSD is suitable for the Ideapad Flex 15?

The current HDD in my Flex 15 has a SATA II (3gb/s) interface, and I just wanted to know if the current connection cable to the HDD  will fit the new SSD, and that the Flex 15 perform OK with the extra performance.

thanks
