Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

Laptop display turns off randomly, also sometimes the display fades to white, or the blacks on the display appear as red, or sometimes there are just weird line patters. The system is still on, occasionally putting the pc into sleep mode then waking it up can turn the display back on, but it usally just turns back off either immediately or after a few minutes.

In fact it just turned off the display and I am having to extend the display onto another monitor right now.

This has been happening for months and putting it in tablet mode seemed to help, but recently it happens with such frequency that the computer is nearly unusable

I have run diagnostics and it says everything is ok.
all updates have been done as well

I have also tried disabling each of the graphics cards one at a time with no effect

any ideas

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

hi, I have the same problem as mflegel, my laptop model is a Lenovo Flex 4 1480, have also read in this forum (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/Flex-4-1480-screen-flickers-on-and-off-or-goes-white/td-p/367853) that also describes the same problem, lcd screen randomly shuts off, when it comes back the white screen appears with soft rounded edge and sometimes the screen color turns red.  there is sort of a solution that one user Bigalpapa tried and it seems to work. So i did what he shared and opened my laptop backcover and located the silver colored wire that is connected to the lcd and pressed firmly on the point where it is connected to the board, hopefully this solves the problem, will share in a few days if it solves the problem.  Lenovo should acknowledge this problem exist and provide a solution.

Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

Hello Mflegel

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Seems like it could just be a software issue.

Try to download the Video and Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page. Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.

If that doesn`t help, then I would recommend that you attempt a factory reset, this would help to tule out any software issues, and if the issue persists after that, then it will indicate a hardware fault.

Note: Please back up all your data as running this reset will delete any data on your machine

1. Turn the machine off and press the recovery button which is located usually next to the power button. If you have a desktop machine you will need to power the machine back on and keep tapping the F2 key.
2. Use the arrow keys and press enter on system recovery. ( Desktop users can skip this)
3. Select “restore from the initial backup” and then “Next”.
4. Click “start” and accept the warning messages.
Length of time can vary depending on the speed of the machine.

If the issue persists, then I would recommend that you get in touch with your local Lenovo support line for a possible repair on the unit.

Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

just an update and clarification, what I opened is not the backcover but the bottom cover of the laptop (sorry for the wrong description, it is not that difficult to open the bottom cover of the laptop compared to the backcover of the laptop monitor). so far it's been 4 days without having any screen problems.

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

trying this solution with opening up the computer.  Getting the cover off was a bit more of a pain than I expected.  So all you did was push down where connected to the board, no additional tape or anything?   Will post back in a couple of days with results.

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

Yes just follow where the silver colored wire ends, just beside the cooling fan and press on it, I did not put any tapes, also I made sure all other connecting wires coming from the monitor are attached firmly by pressing on them, it's been 10 days now since I followed bigalpapa procedure and so far no screen issues.  I hope this procedure also solves your problem. By the way, opening the backcover of the laptop is not that difficult if you have the right tools, I have a set of plastic prying tools I ordered from aliexpress which I used, I just wedged it in, once it opens up a bit, I just slide the tool sideways and the backlid just pops up.

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

glad it also solved your problem, it could now be confirmed the problem is caused by faulty connection, mine has been running for almost a month now without any screen problems, big thanks to Bigalpapa for the solution. For those having the same problems, please read this link (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/Flex-4-1480-screen-flickers-on-and-off-...)

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

Guys, about the link I posted about Bigalpapa solution, I could no longer find his post, either I made a mistake or the link is not there anymore because all I see is a different topic. Sorry about that.

Re: Flex 4-1480 Display Problems

I am getting a problem after my Flex 4 goes to sleep. It comes back on line with a weird black and white pattern like the pictures below. Rebooting seems to fix it temporarily so I don't think it is a hardware issue. I have updated my display drivers and that didn't seem to work. Laptop is only about a year old. Any suggestions?
