Ideapad 510-15IKB fan never idling

2017-01-07, 16:18 PM

Hi guys,

I bought a new 510-15IKB (i5-7200U type). It came with DOS, I installed win10 and configured everything, installed drivers etc. My problem is the fan, it keeps working constantly in idle, even on battery, on battery saver mode, so it just totally neglects the energy management settings (passive cooling, etc.) and CPU temps (34 Celsius and the fan keeps working).

The fan is working in its lowest state (maybe, never heard it be quieter), so the problem is not a loud fan, rather that the fan never turns off during idle. I'm an IT guy, I know how to make things work etc, but this just can't be solved by me.

What I tried:

- Restart etc.

- Reinstall drivers from support page downloads

- Install newest drivers from parts manufacturers (intel etc.)

- Set different energy management settings

- Updated UEFI to newest version (3JCN23WW)

- updated win10 totally

- ran malwarebytes anti-malware and kaspersky internet security 2017, both finished without finding anything

- restarted with discrete graphics turned off in uefi

- restarted with fast boot turned off in uefi

- even tried it using an Ubuntu live session and it is the same

And there is a strange buzzing sound on movement if it is perpendicular to the surface of the fan, it's really quiet, but happens on smaller movements too, and it even happened once while the laptop was completely still on the table. This part of my problem might be totally normal, so my bigger problem is with it not turning off.

It seems like a UEFI problem of thermal tables, like if the fan was meant to kick in at e.g. 30 Celsius (or anything lower than my 34-37 Celsius idle temps), but it should rather kick in at 57-60 Celsius to conserve battery (and fan gearing).

What could be done?

Re: Ideapad 510-15IKB fan running always, making some noise on movement

Tried reflashing the same BIOS but it did not help anything (as I tought it wouldn't).

Moreover, the fan made the buzzing sound again, I could make it go away by tilting the whole laptop 90 degrees back to vertical position and then to horizontal.

Nobody?

I was hoping I could elevate this problem to some kind of technical staff to get it fixed with a new BIOS update or something as the device is brand new.

I'm having the exact same issues with my brand new 510S-13IKB. The smallest jump in CPU usage causes the fan to spin up, and stay up for minutes. It's basically a constant buzz from the laptop. Would really like to know if this is an acknowledged issue, otherwise I don't see any other options than returning it to the store.

I don't think it's an issue worth returning my laptop, in my opinion we just need a new BIOS version with corrected thermal tables. That way the fan could turn off under e.g. 60 Celsius.

What I have found recently:

In device manager under system devices 3 devices say "No driver installed for this device":

Mobile 6th/7th Generation Intel(R) Processor Family I/O Thermal subsystem - 9D31

Mobile 6th/7th Generation Intel(R) Processor Family I/O SMBUS - 9D23

Mobile 6th/7th Generation Intel(R) Processor Family I/O PMC - 9D21

I've read somewhere else that this can be normal as some devices might not need drivers and are BIOS/UEFI supported but it is at least strange that the thermal subsystem - which is most likely the root of our fan problem - is among them.

Update:

Thermal subsystem seems even more strange as the other 2 have correct dates for the installed driver version but thermal dates to 1970.

Actually, I do have the Intel thermal subsystem drivers installed. Doesn't seem to solve anything though.

Tried updating the thermal subsystem driver. Wound up with an old 6th gen-only thermal subsystem driver from 2015 (10.1.1.13). It's probably treated as newer than 10.1.1.36 due to the dates.

Re: Ideapad 510-15IKB fan never idling

I can confirm that my 510S-13IKB does NOT ignore system cooling policies. The noise levels are reduced when the laptop is not plugged in, and changing the plugged-in policy to "passive" makes the laptop less noisy. However, the fan still spins up beyond what's acceptable for the CPU load frequently, and altough changing cooling policy makes it better, it's sort of a hack.

In my case the fan speed is not reduced when on battery but I think it is in it's lowest state on idle on ac power too. The problem is that it never turns off. This way I can't check whether it respects cooling policy, all I can say is it reacts to temperature changes but fails to turn off on idle temps.
