Ideapad 700 15ISK video driver not installing

TL;DR: The Lenovo supplied driver refuses to install. Can anyone point out a place I can find older Lenovo NVidia drivers?

----------

My ideapad (Windows 10, 64 bit) came preinstalled with NVidia drivers version 359.37 for the GTX 950M in it. These worked fine. Then Windows 10 decided to overwrite those with a non-Lenovo NVidia driver through Windows Update. Those will not allow any OpenGL-using program to run at all, so I'm looking for a driver that actually works.

I would think Lenovo driver downloads would be the best location for this, but the only one I can find there now is 376.67. That refuses to install, complaining that "This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware". I have also tried all the drivers NVidia allows me to download, and those all have different critical faults, ranging from refusing to install, freezing on the Windows login screen, crashing any program by "denied access to graphics hardware", and causing bluescreens every 30 seconds or so.

Ideally, I'd want the newest driver in a working form. Lacking that, I'd like to have the Lenovo 359.37 driver back.  But I can't find the installation files for that anywhere. The only way I've found to get it is by factory resetting my computer, but that only lasts me about an hour before Windows decides to automatically destroy my driver again - in spite of "blocking" the update with Microsoft's update hiding tool. Can anyone point out a place I can find older Lenovo NVidia drivers?

Re: Ideapad 700 15ISK video driver not installing

Hello Bovi

Thanks for using the Lenovo forums.

Have a look on the following post, this should help you walk you through rolling back the drivers.

https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-rollback-nvidia-drivers-in-windows-10/

However, this seems more of an issue with your unit rather than the drivers.

Seems like there will be an issue with your graphics card.

Try to download the Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.

Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.

Re: Ideapad 700 15ISK video driver not installing

The only way I have found to have the computer work at all is by uninstalling the Windows Update driver every time it installs itself again. Because I have been doing that, I no longer have the option to roll back the driver in the manner laid out in that article. I would really like to avoid factory resetting once again, which is currently the only way I've seen of getting the old, working drivers. It takes a lot of time. If I could have a download of the 359.37 Lenovo drivers, I would at least be able to reinstall the proper driver.

I have a hard time seeing how the driver refusing to install itself is a problem with my graphics card and not the driver? Surely, when I download a driver specifically supplied for my laptop's graphics card, it should at least recognize the graphics card? The Windows Update driver obviously does recognize it as that successfully installs itself, so Lenovo's driver should as well. The earlier Lenovo drivers I have tried also do recognize it (83os03af and 83r601af - although after installation those two unfortunately suffer from critical faults like those of the non-Lenovo NVidia drivers).

The computer has run for 3 months with no errors at all when using the 359.37 driver. In the cases where I have been forced to factory reset by the automatic driver destruction, the computer also runs with no errors until the time when the driver gets replaced. The evidence clearly points to the changed driver as far as I can see.

Re: Ideapad 700 15ISK video driver not installing

I installed the chipset drivers as you suggested. Surprisingly, that made the latest Lenovo supplied driver pass the system check, it now recognizes the graphics card and installs itself. So far, so good. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work properly. When trying to start Darkest Dungeon it states "Please install the latest OpenGl drivers for your graphics card. (opengl 1.1.0 detected) A GPU capable of OpenGL 3.2 or better is required."

Also, Hearthstone crashes on loading with the latest Lenovo driver - apparently no game will work with that driver. If anyone can tell me where to find 359.37 again, that would help a lot.

Re: Ideapad 700 15ISK video driver not installing

I ventured into the Lenovo partition today, and actually found the factory driver there. Finally my computer is working as it should again.

For anyone else getting screwed by bad NVidia drivers being forced on your computer, you can find the old one under D:\Drivers\NVVGA (assuming the Lenovo hard drive partition is your D). Run Setup.exe.
