Ideapad 710s SSD PROBLEM - Not Booting

Randomly I got the Blue Screen of Death error DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION and apparently this issue occurs because the iastor.sys driver, is not compatible with Windows 10. So I changed the storage controller from Intel Rapid Storage sata controller to Intel mobile express chipset sata controller which was the other driver already on my 3 week old laptop. However, after this the laptop would not boot! It just kept saying 'automatically attempting repairs'.

I then went into the BIOS and changed the SATA from RAID to AHCI and then the laptop would boot. But now the driver is just 'Standard NVM Express Controller'. I tried to reinstall the intel rapid stroage sata controller driver but then the laptop would not boot in RAID or AHCI! So I had to do a system restore and now the laptop seems to be working on AHCI and it has a boot loop on RAID.

My question is, should I put the laptop back on RAID (original factory setting) and after the boot loop should I reset the laptop to install a fresh copy of Win10 from recovery? Or should I leave it as it is now on AHCI with Microsoft Standard NVM Express Controller driver? Are there any disadvantages?

My SSD is a Samsung PM961 (samsung mzvlw512hmjp)

I need some help quickly before my 30 days returns period runs out. I really like the laptop but are there any problems with it?

You have the 30 day policy.... I whould just get a new one to give my self another 30 days to figure out the issue.  Have you tryed a clean install of the os?

Re: Ideapad 710s SSD PROBLEM - Not Booting

Hi, thanks for the reply, this is my 3rd replacement. The supplier (Box UK) has no more units as they are sold out - the first and second unit had wifi issues/cosmetic damage out of the box. I don't really want to return this unless it is faulty.

Is there any difference between AHCI or RAID? So should I set the mode on bios to RAID and then do a fresh install?

Re: Ideapad 710s SSD PROBLEM - Not Booting

I whould try it with RIAD first and if that dosn't work i'd try ACHI becsue raid incorperats the same fetures as ACHI.  Here is a good web site on the difrences http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/difference-between-ahci-and-raid/

Re: Ideapad 710s SSD PROBLEM - Not Booting

I just put it back to RAID in the BIOS and tried to reset the PC. I am getting 'there was a problem when trying to reset this PC'. It looks like RAID won't even work now.

The current driver installed is the microsoft nvm express controller (not Intel Rapid Store Driver for RAID). If I try and install the intel rapid store driver when on ahci the computer will not boot on ahci or raid unless I do a system restore...

What do I do???

Is it posible to extract the driver?  You could also just leave it in ACHI, if it still works, the performance difrences are minimal between the 2 types.

What’s the point of extracting the intel rapid store driver though?

To install the driver, manualy.  If it works in ACHI Id just leave it b/c of the minimal performance diffrences will be hard to tell.  ACHI has more compatibility with drives.

Re: Ideapad 710s SSD PROBLEM - Not Booting

I think I tried to reinstall the intel rapid store driver but it wouldn’t boot so I had to do a system restore again. I think I’ll probably leave it in AHCI - I did get one blue screen of death error when I booted up with AHCI. However I’m not getting it for now - is it best to leave it on AHCI?
