Power button light - turn off? [Lenovo Ideapad 520]

2018-06-17, 7:48 AM

Hi,

there is a small LED light on power button itself (keyboard) on this laptop which is always on when computer is running.

It's really distracting when watching movies at night.

The light on power button is the same like CapsLock or NumLock lights which you can turn off easily.

Is there any way to temporary turn off power button light?

Although I admit the light from the power button can be a little bit bright, I don't think there is a way to turn off the light from the power button, otherwise if you really want that light to get rid off, it will be complicated.

Why not put a dark tape to the light being emitted, or anything that will cover it? I'm pretty sure it will cover the light.

I was thinking of black tape, but it would kinda look bad and the light might be useful sometimes.

Also it might come off at random times and having black tape always nearby is not really a good solution.

But if that's the only way will probably have to do that.

Good day.

There's no way to turn off the indicator light via software/settings.

Regards.

There's really no choice, either you put the black tape or just deal with it.

And perhaps Lenovo has to take note of this and if possible in their next laptops they would try to reduce the brightness of the power button, so a bit of design change.

You can already control CapsLock and NumLock lights via Windows "On-Screen Keyboard" (via software, not physical touch).

They could just make a simple software utility to control that light (on / off). It should be fairly easy.

I had a similar annoyance as the original poster. I tried tape and as you noted it looks bad and is not permanent. I am a neuroscientist,  here's a quick breakdown. Blue light is the best for attention, red/orange light (or anything on that side of the color spectrum) is the best color light for nighttime use.

What I did was take a red permanent marker and I " colored" the power button LED. At first, I did not think this would work great BUT it actually did a very good job. If you are not a fan of using a marker on your laptop for whatever reason, you may wanna give these LightDims a try. While searching for a solution, someone on Reddit suggested them.  You can also find them on Amazon

NOTE: If you do this, it will remove the ability to detect when your battery is on low. With my Thinkpad Yoga when my battery is low, the power LED will flash orange. Since I "colored" this button red, it is now difficult to see this warning. For me, it is well worth it. The advantage of not having a bright light at night outweighs having a color indicator to tell me my battery is dead (I am usually pretty good at knowing this by myself).

TO LENOVO: A very easy fix to this annoyance would be to put the power button on the side of the laptop rather than the front. Personally, I think it would be a great change since it would also reduce the likelihood of accidentally pressing the button when I am in tablet mode.

Let me know if this solution works for you!
