Trying to turn off annoying caps lock indicator - ideapad 100

2016-05-24, 9:06 AM

Hi, I have a Lenovo ideapad 100 and when i click either a. caps lock, b. num lock or c. scroll lock, an annoying square pops up at the bottom middle of my screen indicating that the caps lock is either on or off, same with the other buttons.

I cannot find a solution online anywhere to figure out how to turn this off.

I have gone into regedit, nothing there.

I have gone into control panel > display and also settings > display and had a look at every single option, nothing.

I have had a look at ease of access on control panel and settings, and there's nothing there, either.

I am running Windows 10, if that's any help at all.

Does anyone know how to turn this off? Thanks.

Welcome to the Lenovo Community needhelplease6 !

Have you checked in...... Control Panel..... Display..... Change Display Settings.... Advance Settings..... Screen Configuration Tab ?   On that tab should be additional settings to enable / disable the on-screen display for Cap lock and Num Lock.

Thank you for replying, but no, I do not have that option. See pic attached.

Although you do not have the individual settings for the Num lock and Cap lock you do have a setting for Enabling On Screen Display.  Have you tried cycling that On and Off.  In otherwords, enable it, reboot, disable it then reboot again?

Hello, thanks for the reply.

Yes, done this 4 times now, 2 times with it enabled, 2 times with it disabled. Rebooted and still the same.

I'm running out of ideas now.

I would next try re-installing the Lenovo Energy Manager.  On the newer Lenovo laptops the on-screen display is incorporated with the Energy Management install.  If the Lenovo Energy Manager is shown in the Control Panel's Uninstall Software, I would take it a step further and uninstall your present version, reboot and then do a clean install of Energy Manager.  That may resolve the inability to disable the on-screen display function. Here is the download link.....

I uninstalled the Lenovo Energy Manager, located the folder in user files, deleted it, rebooted.

I then did a clean install as you suggested of the energy manager, rebooted again and it is the same as before, the indicator is still there.

What do now?

About the only other option is to uninstall the Lenovo Energy Manager and then see if that resolves your issue. A side effect of uninstalling Energy Manager maybe that options such as Conservation Mode no longer work.

I came across another discussion for a different Lenovo model in which one person reported they eliminated the Caps Lock on-screen indicator by uninstalling the Lenovo Utility software from their laptop.  The documentation on what the Lenovo Utility software does is very vague, but it's worth giving it a try.
