IdeaPad Pro 5 Gen 8 (14, AMD) disaster support from lenovo

I am writing to share my experience with the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 14APH8. While I appreciate the impressive hardware choices in your lineup, I am disappointed with the fan behavior and BIOS support, which seem to be persistent issues across the IdeaPad and Yoga/Aura series.

As many users have reported on forums and platforms like Reddit, the fan curves on these devices are problematic. In my case, after just 30 minutes of use, the CPU temperatures have remained below 39°C, yet the fans are operating as though the system is overheating. This not only causes unnecessary noise but also invites dust into the system, potentially compromising long-term performance.

For comparison, I’ve used other laptops like the MacBook Pro 14 and HP’s 14-inch models, and they remain completely silent until CPU temperatures reach 65-70°C. This stark contrast highlights a significant gap in Lenovo's software optimization.

Lenovo is losing a good portion of their customers like this and I will do my best to advise everybody to skip these lineups of produts.

I am a software developer and understand the challenges of addressing bugs and implementing improvements. However, adjusting fan curves or providing users with customizable fan settings in the BIOS should not be an insurmountable task. At the very least, giving users the option to control fan behavior would go a long way in enhancing the user experience.

Unfortunately, this issue reflects poorly on an otherwise excellent hardware offering. If this problem persists, I am unlikely to consider Lenovo products in the future and will actively discourage others from doing so.

I’ve attached a screenshot of my CPU temperatures alongside the fan activity to illustrate my frustration. I hope Lenovo takes this feedback seriously and works towards a resolution. Just by writing this my fans are going brrrrr....such a lovely experience from a big company like Lenovo.

I completely agree with you I have the same ideapad 5 pro with 2 big heat pipes and 2 fans. My girlfriend has ideapad 3 with small heat pipe and 1 fan and hers stays silent during light workload, like what is going on Lenovo you are giving us worse experience on much cheaper laptop with worse cooling. You put such great cooling solution and then making it awful with your decisions. Frustrated so much.

Hi igradi,

Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback and experience with the Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 14APH8. I understand how frustrating it can be to deal with persistent fan noise and suboptimal BIOS support, especially when you have high expectations from the hardware.

Here are a few steps you can take to address the fan behavior:

  1. Update BIOS and Drivers: Ensure that your BIOS and all system drivers are up to date. Sometimes, updates can include improvements to fan control and thermal management. You can check for updates using the Lenovo Vantage App or directly from the Lenovo Support Website.

  2. Adjust Power Settings: You can try adjusting the power settings to see if it helps with the fan noise. In Windows, go to Control Panel > Power Options and select a power plan that prioritizes quiet operation, such as "Power Saver" or a custom plan with reduced maximum processor state.

  3. Lenovo Vantage Thermal Mode: Lenovo Vantage also offers different thermal modes that can help manage fan noise. Open Lenovo Vantage, navigate to the "Device" section, and select "Power" to find the thermal mode settings. You can switch to "Quiet Mode" to reduce fan activity.

  4. Custom Fan Control Software: While Lenovo does not officially support third-party fan control software, some users have found success with tools like "Notebook FanControl" or "SpeedFan." Please use these tools with caution, as improper settings can affect system stability.

  5. Feedback to Lenovo: Your feedback is valuable, and I recommend submitting it directly to Lenovo through the Service Request page. This ensures that your concerns are formally recorded and can be considered for future BIOS updates.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, I recommend visiting one of our Authorized Service Centers for a thorough inspection of your device.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to improve our products and services. Your feedback helps us identify areas for improvement, and we are committed to enhancing the user experience for all our customers.

Best regards,
Dex_Lenovo
