My Ideapad 3 15ARE05 keeps on randomly restarting

As the subject says, my laptop keeps on randomly restarting, especially when it's connected to power. I keep experiencing the same issue when I try to open applications such as games or my web browser. I also experience this when it's on battery mode, but it rarely happens. I've tried every tip I found on the internet regarding the issue but still am not aware what might be causing this. I've resetted my laptop multiple times, and changed the thermal paste for the cpu, but the problem still persist. Can I have your opinions on this, or possibly a fix? thank you

Re:My Ideapad 3 15ARE05 keeps on randomly restarting

Hi guest35552,

I'm sorry to hear about the issues you're experiencing with your Ideapad 3 15ARE05.

I may advise that you can try these steps to isolate the issue further, these steps are not to be considered as fix.

  1. I suggest booting the machine to safe mode. In the safe mode, try testing if the machine will randomly restart if the laptop is connected to power. Did the machine restart automatically in safe mode when you connected the ac adapter?
  2. One more thing, boot the machine to BIOS interface. Here are the steps:
    - Remove all cables connected to the device (power cable, hdmi, external mouse, external keyboard, etc)
    - Be sure device is switched off / powered off
    - Press and hold down the power button for 60 seconds
    - When done, re-attach all cables
    - Attach the  ac adapter and let the unit charge for about couple of minutes
    - Locate your machine's Novo button from the either sides. Check this knowledge base showing how it would look like: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/solutions/ht062552-introduction-to-novo-button-ideapad
    - Click this by using an unfolded paperclip or anything similar that would fit.
    - Machine should power up and boot straight to Novo Menu.
    - Navigate and select using the arrow keys to BIOS Set Up.
    - When you are in the BIOS connect the ac adapter and you may also stay in battery power, observe if the machine will automatically restart. Did the machine restart even in BIOS interface? If the machine restarted randomly in BIOS interface, this is a hardware issue.

Here are a few steps you can try to diagnose and potentially fix the problem:

  1. Update Drivers and BIOS: Ensure all your drivers and BIOS are up to date. You can use the Lenovo Vantage app to check for updates.

  2. Check for Overheating: Even though you've changed the thermal paste, it's still possible that overheating could be causing the restarts. Make sure the cooling system is working properly and that the vents are not blocked.

  3. Run Hardware Diagnostics: Use the built-in diagnostic tools in Lenovo Vantage or visit the Lenovo Support website to run hardware diagnostics.

  4. Power Supply Issues: Since the problem occurs more frequently when connected to power, it might be related to the power adapter or the internal power circuitry. Try using a different power adapter if possible.

  5. Check Event Viewer: Open the Event Viewer in Windows to check for any critical errors or warnings that occur around the time of the restarts. This might give you more insight into what is causing the issue.

  6. Warranty and Service: If the issue persists, it might be a hardware fault. Check your warranty status here and consider submitting a service request or visiting a local authorized service center.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you need further assistance.

Best regards,
Dex_Lenovo

Re:My Ideapad 3 15ARE05 keeps on randomly restarting

Hi Dex,

I have tried your suggestions, and here's the result:

1. The problem still occurs even when on Safe boot.

2. The problem is not present when navigating through BIOS interface

3. Checked with Lenovo vantage app that all BIOS and drivers are up-to date.

4. Made sure that exhaust are free from blockage by lifting the laptop and re-cleaning and dusting the fans.

5. Event Viewer shows Event ID: 41 and Error: 6008 which both pertained to the sudden power shutdown.

6. I might go to my nearest authorized service center to see if it really is a hardware issue.

P.S I also tried the Lenovo Diagnostic Tool but it does not find faults in any of the hardware it has diagnosed.

Thank you for your help Dex.

I forgot to mention that I also tried using a different power adapter but it still occurs.

Re:My Ideapad 3 15ARE05 keeps on randomly restarting

Hi Dewaede,

Thank you for the detailed update.

Given that the issue persists in Safe Mode but not in the BIOS interface, it suggests that the problem might be related to the operating system or software rather than hardware.

Here are a few additional steps you can try:

Check for Malware: Run a full system scan using a reliable antivirus program to ensure there are no malware or viruses causing the issue.

Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to see if a third-party application or service is causing the restarts. Here’s how to perform a clean boot.

System File Checker: Run the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow.

Power Settings: Check your power settings in Windows. Go to Control Panel > Power Options and ensure that your power plan settings are configured correctly.

Event Viewer Analysis: Since Event Viewer shows Event ID: 41 and Error: 6008, you might want to look deeper into these logs to identify any specific drivers or applications that could be causing the issue.

If none of these steps resolve the problem, visiting an authorized service center would be the best next step.

Feel free to share us an update with your machine. Thank you for allowing us to help.

Best regards,
Dex_Lenovo
