Overheating

My Ideapad Pro 5 (the gen 9 with amd) randomly overheats even when its in sleep. What happens is that I would put my laptop to sleep and put it in my bag, and around an hour later, I take it out and its so hot. Sometimes, its too hot to even touch and hold. But as soon as I turn it on, the fans kick in and it cools pretty quickly. What's happening here and should I get it looked at or is there something I can do?

Re:Overheating

Hi 5HR4G,

I'm sorry to hear about the overheating issue with your Ideapad Pro 5 (Gen 9 with AMD) when it is in sleep mode.

Here are some things you can consider.

  1. Sleep Mode vs. Hibernate:

    • Sometimes, laptops can wake up from sleep mode due to background processes or network activity. This can cause the laptop to overheat if it's in an enclosed space like a bag.
    • Solution: Try using Hibernate mode instead of Sleep. Hibernate saves your work and completely powers down the laptop, which can prevent it from waking up unexpectedly. You can enable Hibernate by going to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Check Hibernate.
  2. Check for Background Processes:

    • Background processes or updates can cause the laptop to wake up and overheat.
    • Solution: Ensure that no background applications are running before putting your laptop to sleep. You can check this in Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  3. Update BIOS and Drivers:

    • Outdated BIOS or drivers can sometimes cause power management issues.
    • Solution: Use the Lenovo Vantage App to check for and install any available updates for your BIOS and drivers.
    • Please try to check if the current BIOS version of your machine is the same as the recommended BIOS version uploaded on the support site. Here is how you can check for your machine's BIOS version: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht070218-how-to-check-your-bios-version-on-windows-7-8-and-10 On the Lenovo support page, type your machine serial number on the bar to load up the correct drivers. Go to Drivers and Software tab, click on the Manual Update tab. Look for the BIOS/UEFI driver and find the details which would include the version. Try to compare if your machine runs the BIOS firmware from Lenovo support site.
  4. Thermal Management Settings:

    • Adjusting the thermal management settings can help manage the heat better.
    • Solution: In Lenovo Vantage, navigate to Device > Power and adjust the thermal settings to a more conservative profile.

I hope this helps. Feel free to share an update anytime.

Best regards,
Dex_Lenovo
