Page fault on nonpaged area in 520s-14ikb after BIOS update
Hello,
Sorry for the lengthy message but I’m trying to be as clear and detailed as I can.
My problem
Since yesterday evening (29th january), erros of page fault in nonpaged area are occuring in my laptop (Lenovo 520s-14ikb). First just while using my pc (browsing the internet and working on documents), now it occurs almost anytime I boot my laptop. I am, luckily, able to run through the blue screen reboot process and continue using my laptop untill the next error message but I’m sure something is wrong and I want to get it fixed.
What I have done
I have read troubleshoot pages on the internet and have done or not done the following:
- I have checked for windows updates and driver updates. Everything was up to date
- I read about paging file size management settings that may be cause of the problem. I have looked up these settings but find it scary to change anything here so I have not made any changes. Also because I feel like this is not the issue. (automatic file size management was already turned of)
- I read about running a check disk (and fixes) with the chkdsk /f /r command. I have executed chkdsk /f the first time, it said there was some things to fix which it handeled in a few minutes. Next, I ran chkdsk /f /r and there were many more fixes which took about 20 minutes.
- I ran Windows Memory Diagnostics tool for a memory check. No problems were found.
- Now, there were few other options on the internet suggesting opening the pc and physically detaching RAM. I did not do this because I know I’m not an expert so I’ll probably only do damaging things to my machine.
- I checked out the system restore option to restore any previous system settings, in case any recent updates or system settings may have caused the problem. Unfortunately I get the message ‘This option is not available since your pc upgrade was more than 10 days ago.’
What I think the error is
I did all these checks to exclude few possible causes for the error. Now, I am afraid the following is the case. On yesterday morning (29th januari) the message of Lenovo with urgent BIOS update prompted in my screen. (This message promted the first time a little while ago but I ignored because I am stubborn and thought this was an update for the biometric devices. Yesterday I decided to read into BIOS update and immediately executed the update.) So, I did the following:
- I installed and executed https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/4qcn51ww.exe from https://support.lenovo.com/si/nl/solutions/ht500008#Update .
I am very much afraid that the error is caused by the BIOS update since these two events are so close to eachother and I have virtually excluded many other causes.
Now, there’s an old and new model of my 520s-14ikb, so I always have to think a little before choosing which device I want to download updates for. First I was afraid I actually installed the wrong BIOS update file, but fortunately this is not the case.
Since system restore is not available (I guess because of the BIOS update), I now thought of returning to my older BIOS version (I know I have to allow this in BIOS) to see if BIOS update indeed is the cause of the problem. Internet tells me I have three options which all sound ‘scary’ te me:
- Reset internally from your device’s BIOS or UEFI menu
- Reset by removing or replacing the CMOS battery
- Clear and reset BIOS settings by clearing your motherboard jumper
My question
My question is: what is the best thing for me to do right now? Is there any possibility to obtain .exe file of previous BIOS version (Lenovo doesn’t publish this on the product page) so I can restore this by installation of this file?
Extra system info
I read on BSOD Finding and fixing them - Microsoft Community what information is useful for solving BIOS errors, so I have minidump files, MSinfo and computer specifications available in a zip if required.
I'm hopefull anyone on the forum can help me in this situation :)
Best,
Ilse
