Power Surge Error on USB ports, IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7 Laptop - Type 82R9

IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7 Laptop - Type 82R9

I cannot plug my fifine USB microphone into any USB ports. Every time I do, I get a power surge error and the USB port wouldn't work anymore until I restart the laptop.

The USB port works with my mouse, fan, and other accessories. The fifine USB microphone works with my other laptops such as my surface pro 5, but not the lenovo.

I have tried:

  • restarting my laptop
  • updating bios and windows update (it's up to date)
  • removing all other USB accessories and only plugging in the mic
  • tried different usb ports
  • tried usb hub

any suggestions would be great.

Re:Power Surge Error on USB ports, IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7 Laptop - Type 82R9

Greetings @Affiinity.

Sorry to read that your fifine USB microphone is not working with the USB port.

Here are some other troubleshooting steps I think may perform and then see how it goes.

Perform a static discharge/power cycle
- Remove all cables connected to the device (power cable, hdmi, external mouse, external keyboard, etc)
- Be sure device is switched off / powered off
- Press and hold down the power button for 60 seconds
- When done, re-attach all cables
- Attach the  ac adapter and let the unit charge for about couple of minutes

BIOS Load Default Settings
- Press the Novo Button: https://support.lenovo.com/ph/en/solutions/ht062552-introduction-to-novo-button-ideapad
- The button can be reached/clicked by an unfolded paperclip or similar. The machine will power up to BIOS.
- Choose the BIOS setup.
- If you do not have a Novo Button, then repeatedly pressing F1 of F2 or Shift + Power button (FN+F1 or F2) on startup will take you to the BIOS.
- Inside the BIOS Set Up, navigate to the Exit Menu.
- Select Load Setup Default - click Enter, select YES and click Enter.
- Select Exit and Save Changes then click Enter, select YES and click Enter.
- Laptop should boot back to Windows.
- Check if the USB's are now working, if no, then continue below:

System Board/Motherboard Update
Download and Install the newest BIOS, Chipset drivers for your device:
You can find and install the newest drivers from the Lenovo Support Page: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/

Just plot in the serial number of the device and hit enter, might have to press it twice, then head to Drivers & Software, select Manual Update, then select the BIOS and Chipset section
**Note: Make sure the AC adapter is connected and that you have at least 30% battery charge when performing system board updates.

Re-install USB Root Hub and Host Controller
Try right clicking the USB Root Hub and/or the Host Controller, select disable, then re-enable it. If unsuccessful, right click and uninstall both + drivers, then restart the device and have Windows install the generic drivers for the devices.

Try testing the specified USB mic to the affected USB ports.

Re:Power Surge Error on USB ports, IdeaPad Flex 5 14ALC7 Laptop - Type 82R9

Hi, the solutions only temporarily fix the problem, and it comes up again. Its not very fair to try the static discharge everytime and close all my tabs/applications to do this. I'm currently getting it repaired by technician (in which they can't find anything wrong.
And after the first repair it still had certain issues on USB port usage. Not sure why that happens.

Hi Affiinity,

I'm sorry to hear that the issue persists. It's unfortunate that the technician couldn't find anything wrong. It might be a good idea to have a second opinion from another technician or service center. You can find a local authorized service center using this link.

If the issue still persists after the second opinion, it might be a hardware issue that needs a replacement part. You can check for replacement parts using this link.

Also, you can check the warranty status of your product using this link and if it's still under warranty, you can submit a service request for technical support using this link. I hope this helps.

Best regards,
Dex_Lenovo
