Removal of LCU packages in Windows to free up space on low storage devices.

I understand that the LCU packages under Windows/servicing are copies.   In Windows/settings/updates/history they give some instructions on how to delete these.  I've found them incomprehensible and a  search of Windows Forums reveals that no one seems to have ever got any clear advice.   I've taken to just deleting the folder contents a few days after each cumulative update (ie if all is running at its usual standard) but I presume that using a command line would clean it up more thoroughly and maybe much faster.  The part that has me perplexed is in finding the "path" - presumably those of us with 32gb devices may have succeeded in freeing up around 600MB after each update and if any such have succeeded I would be appreciative of getting the details; as presumably would others whose devices show between 800MB and 2GB free ( without any additional or removed items).

Re:Removal of LCU packages in Windows to free up space on low storage devices.

I asked Google Bard how to do it.  It didn't know but "confidently" presented answers which after a while looked close but with oddities.  Here is the successful line:

dism /Online /Remove-Package /PackagePath:C:\Windows\servicing\LCU\Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~19041.3803.1.3  Path came from Windows/Servicing/LCU folder - properties and the name is the folders.  Unlike deletion from the files area this produced what looked like a new install of Windows at start-up but all files and apps seemed untouched and it was much faster than that deletion.

Re:Removal of LCU packages in Windows to free up space on low storage devices.

Numerous attempts with variations of the numerous Command lines stated on the "net" seemed to result in the keyboard becoming inoperative and none of the usual (reinstall drivers etc.) worked; so I re-set Windows and wiped all my personal files; nice to start again with plenty of space.

Re:Removal of LCU packages in Windows to free up space on low storage devices.

UPDATE:  Tried with the latest (which was a repeat of the one removed earlier!  and it was not deletable by any means (System file) don't know whether this is an unusual or even unique event.   Microsoft's documentation indicates that it can be deleted so it may be a one off and they haven't corrected the general guidance.   All in all it's a lot of work just to delete about 700 mb per month so I think I'll give up on it.

Hi,

I understand your frustration. It can indeed be a lot of work to free up space, especially when dealing with system files.

Best regards.
