530s-14ARR - DIMM slots, ssd upgrade and Freesync compatibility

2018-09-10, 2:47 AM

Just bought the Ideapad 530s Ryzen 5 with model no. 81H1001MMX and a LNVNB161216 motherboard

But a few things are not covered completely in the PSREF or in the hardware manual, nor does HWInfo give a clear view of it.

1. RAM - listed as 2x4 but also 16 max support.

RAM is listed as dual channel and 2 DIMMs which is great and important for the APU. But short of opening the computer noone - including the seller or Lenovo Tech support in europe - can tell me if both are changeable. Lenovo are famous for soldering RAM, so I want to know...

Can both slots be changed?

2. SSD

Listed as PCIe/m.2 Sata. I know there is a 2280 Toshiba 256 GB NVMe in it. But are there more slots? for instance a 2242? or even room for a 2.5inch maybe?

HWInfo lists there are 4 PCIe slots, 1x8 and 3x1....I can imagine the 1x8 is for the NVMe(or maybe a discrete GPU, ie unused?), and one of the x1 is for the WIFI. What about the last 2 x1's?

3. Freesync

Ryzen 5 2500U supports AMD Freesync and from HWInfo I can see my model has an LG-philips panel (Monitor Name (Manuf): LG Display LP140WF8-SPP1)
which I seem to have read somewhere supports Freesync. But in the RADEON settings it says Freesync not available. Is that a software thing or a BIOS thing or it's just not supported anyway?

Thanks so much in advance :)

Re: 530s-14ARR - DIMM slots, ssd upgrade and Freesync compatibility

Hi Cordae,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

In respond to your questions:

  1. From this Ideapad 530s RAM Disassembly Guide here , the 2 DIMMS are changeable. This video is for the IdeaPad 530S (81EV, 81EU) and but it’s also the same case for IdeaPad 530S (81H1) as discussed on the Hardware Maintenance Manual (see page 48).

  1. From the Hardware Maintenance Manual (see page 50-51), There’s only one PCIe SSD slot (size 22x80). The other is a Wireless Card (size 16x30). No room for 2.5” SSD.

As for the PCIe lanes, here are the breakdown according to the block diagram. This is taken for the Intel model but the design should be identical to the AMD.

PCIe M.2 SSD - x4 lanes

M.2 PCie WLAN - x1 lane

APU Graphics - x4 lanes

eDP (internal screen) - x2 lanes

  1. Based on the Freesync Monitor list, the LG Display LP140WF8-SPP1 is not listed as a freesync monitor/display. This could be the reason why Freesync isn’t supported on this model.

Regards,

Don't know where my post gone..

So again:

Could you confirm a 2280 M.2 Slot for this model?

@Ifixit I found a video where you can see enough space for a 2280 but only a screw for 2242 which isn't really understandable.

The hardware maintenance show a 2280 and in the spare pasts you won't find a 2242 either?

So I'm quite confused now.

Thanks.

has two ram slots, comes with 2x 4gb ram chip to make up to 8 gb

storage is one 256gb pcie m.2 ssd (2242). Has only bolt to screw 2242 to the mother board, but you can put a 2280 ssd sitting on top of the 2242 bolt and then tie the 2280 ssd with a tape, Install back the cover (come with the computer) to secure it the ssd.

Re: 530s-14ARR - DIMM slots, ssd upgrade and Freesync compatibility

When it comes to freesync...

I have a MSI Optix MAG27CQ display. 1440p 144Hz freesync. However, Freesync was not available, I sideloaded drivers and now it seem to be activated during 1080p resolution (which makes no sense) The monitor supports following resolutions over HDMI:

- 720p 120/60/50Hz

- 900p 120/60/50Hz

- 1080p 120/60/50Hz

- 1440p120/60/50Hz

However the 530S 14ARR only has HDMI 1.4b (WHY LENOVO!? WHY!?) because of this it can not produce 120Hz in 1440p, (although the chipset is capable of it) but wierdly enough it can only do 120Hz in 1080p and 900p, but not 720p (!?). Which is super strange. I have sideloaded AMD drivers for now, which breaks the Radeon Settings, but offers superior stability. In february AMD will start supporting people with their own graphics drivers, which is awesome. I'm hoping to be able to use the full range of features which AMD is marketing on their website. Lenovo's own drivers are way too buggy at the moment. Especially when you have resolution, refreshrate and freesync requirements.

two ram slot are changeable.

ssd slot only can screw in 2242, if you want to replace 2280, you have to tape it and cover it with the ssd cover that came with it.

lfiit is right, enough space for 2280 but you have to tape it down. only 2242 can screw in.

On the subject of the 530s-14ARR, it has 2 memory slots, and on the mintenance manual you referred to it says maximum RAM capacity of 16GB. Does this mean total between the 2 slots or per slot? In other words, could I install 32GB of RAM if I wanted?

Thank you.

Do you need to remove the 2242 screw retainer to add a 2280 ssd as it seems to stand proud with it left in place? Does the retainer unscrew as I don't want to go meddling with it if it doesn't?
