Add a second SSD in LENOVO IDEAPAD 5 (AMD) 14" 14ARE05

2020-09-08, 13:42 PM

Hello,

I saw on an website a picture of lenovo IDEAPAD 5 and we can see a second slot for SSD on the motherboard . I saw on a data sheet from your website that there is indeed a second slot one in 2280 the other in 2242 (See both pictures below). I need to know if I can expand the storage size by adding a second SSD on the second free slot. and keep the SSD already installed with the windows system?

II called the support technique and send an e-mail, and they answered that they can not give me an answer. Who can tell me if it is possible? Thank you

Hi PEtio92,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

There are variants of the IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 Platform that do offer secondary m.2 storage.

You can check physically on your systemboard for available m.2 PCIe SSD slot or share your machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

It can be an opportunity for added storage if needed.

Update us soon as convenient.

Regards

Thank you for the answer the exact model is : IdeaPad 5 14ARE05 81YM0022FR

I attached in this message, the data sheet of my exact model that says "M.2 2242 or 2280 SSD / PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4".

and it is the "or" that makes me doubt.

I would like to be sure that I can use the second SSD at same time than the first already installed. I just want keep the 256go SSD with windows already  installed in the computer and buy a second SSD to stock my pictures or videos or documents.....Is it possible because the technical support doesn't give me any answer...Thank you in advance

Hi PEtio92,

The Pdf file would show same Commodity SSD 2242 PCIe that came with MTM 81YM0022FR.

Checking further on your systemboard (PN 5B21A98866) shows from parts lookup that there is available m.2 SSD PCIe slot 2280 which possibly have have JSSD1 under the sticker or near the location.

On the same parts lookup under Compatible Tab would be OEM SSD available as per OEM offering too.

Regards

Hello,

Thank you for the quick answer but that does not answer to my question.

I already knew that there is a second slot for SSD. But I just need to know if I add a second SSD on the free slot of this model, will the motherboard be able to manage it as a memory extension? Will I see it on windows as à second storage? Will i see the 2 SSD (The one already installed with windows system and the second that I will install on the free slot?)

Nobody from LENOVO can inform me of that?

I already contact the technical support and they can't give me an answer. I  try to have an answer for 2 weeks and nobody can help me from LENOVO

Hi PEtio92,

Greetings.

will the motherboard be able to manage it as a memory extension?

No, it will not be seen as a memory or a storage extension.

Will i see the 2 SSD?

Yes, it will see it in BIOS and Windows.

In disk manager this shows as two separate storage like drive C (with Windows) and another drive (?) as free available drive.

Regards

Than you very much for this clear answer.

It is exactly what I needed to know. When I told storage extension, I wanted to say with a second SSD in disk manager :-).

I just wanted to be sure that the bios will see it because I read on an other website that we can not use the 2 SSD at the same time so I thank that we could only boot on first or second SSD but never see both at same time.

I read it here :

https://laptopmedia.com/highlights/inside-lenovo-ideapad-5-14-disassembly-and-upgrade-options/

It is written :

"In terms of storage, there are two M.2 slots – one of them fits 2242 units with speeds of PCIe x2, while the other can hold 2280 device, running with 4 PCIe lanes. According to Lenovo, they can work only one at the time, but we can’t confirm that."

According to them this information came from LENOVO.

I actually have this exact laptop with factory 512GB 2242 M.2 Nvme, and added a 2280 1TB Crucial P1 Nvme. The second drive is not recognised in the system at all.
Bios only shows the factory drive.

Is this behaviour expected? Can two nvme drives work at the same time or can I only use one at a time?

Can anyone please confirm is this model is expected to work with two nvme drives?
I'm starting to go crazy with this - cannot force the machine to detect the second 2280 drive

Hi Migakzy.

Did you manage to have the twoangry SSd seen by bios?

Because I would be angry if I buy an additionnal SSD if it is not recognized by system while they told me here that it would work!! Especially because I insisted by showing other site that wrote that it is not possible.

Did you try to do this? sorry it is in french and sorry for my English
