After adding new 2.5" ssd from crucial, my computer won't start.

2021-06-07, 21:45 PM

Yesterday I got a new 2.5" ssd and the required cable to connect it to my computer, then went to connect it. I did everything according to the instructions, making sure to unplug the battery and drain the power. When i tried to power it on with the new drive as well as the old one connected, the light just flashed on and off for a few seconds. after that I tried disconecting the SATA cable from my new drive but leaving it in the outlet, and the computer still didn't power on. Only after having nothing plugged into the SATA port did my computer turn on. I know I don't have a problem with my drive or cable, as they came brand new from amazon. In that case, what's the issue with my computer that doesn't allow it to turn on with a second drive? I have an ideapad 3 gaming.

Welcome to the Community Forums gordasyflacas7,

Thanks for sharing your query here. It would be a good start to share your machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help in specifying your machine variant. A machine type model / MTM consists of more than four characters.

Update us soon as convenient.

Regards.

Are you sure you have the main battery plugged back in all the way?

Can you get into the BIOS/Setup options (tap F2 or Fn+ F2 when starting up the laptop)?

If you followed the instructions to use only non-metallic pry tools to open the case, and unplugged the battery as soon as bottom cover was removed, then that should exclude any short circuits being the cause, so check closely and make sure no connections are loose etc.

Regards,

Hello,

The brand new drive from Amazon was shipped completely devoid of data.  So your Microsoft or other operating system is not present as shipped.  You must install Microsoft and if desired your old user data onto the new drive before it will boot up.

Often special "cloning" software is available from the new drive manufacturer.

Then completely remove and unplug the old hard drive after cloning data onto the new drive.  If you want to use it for additional space, completely erase the old drive before re-installing it...

I have had trouble with the cloning process myself.  The fall back is to clean install your operating system onto the new blank drive, by using a Windows installation usb downloaded from Microsoft.com.  (You won't have to purchase a new copy of Windows, if you already have an authorized copy, this will authorize in the background during Windows automated updates.)

Good Luck!

Hi gordasyflacas7,

In addition, we do assume that the machine should still boot fine from the 256G M.2 PCIe 2242 SSD preloaded with Win10 without the SATA cable.

It would appear that you need to check the functionality of the same cable and drive on another machine as it can be a probable point of failure.

From the parts look up site, OEM recommended cable is PN 5C10S29927 HDD Cable L 81LK.

Regards.

Yes, it boots completely fine with only the original drive plugged in. I have the right cable im sure of that, but since i dont have another machine ill just have to wait and check later. I might do what a post above suggested and boot through a usb and see how that works.
