Battery stop charging when plug in HDMI monitor

2021-09-20, 15:58 PM

I am using ideapad-720S-14IKB. Everything was OK in the past three years.

But on Sep 18, after Windows Update (I can't help but it just update automatically),  the battery charging went wrong.

For some reason it stop charging. I tried many action to find the reason. Wifi , website , software or USB didn't cause the problem.

But when I plugin HDMI with another monitor, the battery will stop charging with in 5~15 seconds.

And when I disconnect the HDMI, meanwhile reconnect the battery, it can start charging again.

The same HDMI monitor I also use for playing NS Switch, and it has no such problem.

Dose anyone know what's going on and how to solve it? I appreciate for any suggestion.

Welcome to the Community Forums @TTWTW

Sorry to know about such issue on the battery.

Perhaps you can try going through these troubleshooting steps.

Perform a static discharge/power cycle
- Make sure there is still remaining battery power, able to power up the machine.
- Disconnect all cables and/or peripheral devices connected to the machine (ex. power cable, hdmi cable, external mouse/keyboard, flashdrives, etc).
- Be sure device is powered/switched off.
- Press and hold down the power button for as long as 60 seconds to drain flea power or excess voltage.
- Connect the charger and let it charge for a couple of minutes.
- Power it up again as usual.

Uninstall-reinstall Battery drivers
- Access Device Manager. You can go by pressing Windows Key + X, then select Device Manager.
- Click the Batteries section in the Device Manager window.
- Go ahead and right-click the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and choose Uninstall from the menu.
- Click on Uninstall to confirm.
- Restart the device and the Windows itself will install the generic driver type for the battery to be installed.

Once the machine restarts give it a few moments to charge then observe again.

Also, kindly share your machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) indicated on the sticker underneath the device, this will help identifying your machine variant. A machine type model / MTM consists of more than four characters.

Regards.
Dex

Hi Dex,

I simply did the second method (Uninstall-reinstall Battery drivers), and it seems to be recovered now, thanks a lot!

I'll keep observing if there's any further problem.

My MTM is 81BD002WTW.

Except for Windows Update, another event might cause the problem is that I went to another company and use their projector with HDMI, without my battery charging.

Hope these clues can help you to find out the problem and improve the device.

Thank you so much again.

Hi Dex,

Sorry to bother you again. Unfortunately the same problem happened again.

So I tried every of your steps above, but it's still not charging when  I plugin HDMI monitor.

Meanwhile I can still plugin USB and connect to my mobile phone, with battery charging properly.

Is there any other method I can try? Thank you.

Hi,

Would the same issue on battery occur if you are to connect it to a different monitor other than the one you have?

If you will connect the hdmi cable only (TV turned off), will the battery stop charging? Let us know.

Perhaps try to run a diagnostic scan for any possible hardware failure on the unit that could be connected to the issue. You may share the scan result.

Regards.

Hi Dex,

I've tried to connect to another TV with different HDMI cable, and the same issue occurred.

And when I turn off the TV and original monitor with connecting HDMI cable only, both of them still cause the battery stop charging.

I will do the diagnostic scan and let you know the result later. Thank you.

Hi Dex,

I went to Lenovo local service center, and seems like the problem is on the charger itself.

After changing a new one, the battery run stably with HDMI now.

I actually did heard some sizzle noise like "tsuuu~tsuuu" from the charger once or twice, but fail to associate it with the event.

Hope this experience can be useful for you and everyone on this community.

And thanks again for your support.
