Bios Update Failed 6JCN32WW - Lenovo ideapad 320-15IKB

Hey Lenovo.

It seems that you are not giving enough attention to your bugged BIOS updates.

Tried to apply the BIOS.fd using EFI boot, and the following error ocurred:

ERROR: INISI 15h failed

Internal Error Code 0x20

Permission is denied by user.

Other thing is, you dont need to pack your firmware updates into executables only that using Linux we have to extract them with "innoextract" and "7za" to extract the InsydeH20 EFI file.

Lenovo ideapad 320-15IKB, same issue while trying to upgrade my BIOS.

Hello,

Under Windows 10, when you selected the .exe file to install your new BIOS, did you remember to select "run as administrator?"  That will raise the permission status of the executable.  Run as Administrator is the Windows equivalent to running as super user under Linux.

Lenovo is starting to bring more and more BIOS files into conformance with the linux package fwupd.  Slowly more and more systems are becoming active under this.   Investigate your distribution's documentation, implementation varies between the hundreds of linux distributions available.  For support it helps to state which linux distribution you are using.

Sincerely,

Usedtoberich

Hi Usedtoberich

The "run as administrator" will not work on Linux since it's an Windows executable package. I don't have dual boot to test it.

But that is not the issue cause i've extracted the EFI file that executes the firmware update from the exe file, moved it to my ESP partition, created a boot entry with `efibootmgr`, disabled secureboot(cause i have deployed my own keys) and selected that EFI Update boot entry. It should work, but the error reported above ocurred:

ERROR: INISI 15h failed

Internal Error Code 0x20

Permission is denied by user.

The very same error happens on other BIOSes being applied on Windows laptops, and that's why i believe it's not a problem with the Operating System i using but rather a BIOS update error.

About Lenovo taking some action to provide better fwupd compliant updates, that's really good to know, and i hope this applies also to laptops that were not only sold with Linux pre-installed.

Hello,

My first comment:  I see a frequent post on these forums:  "I installed the BIOS as recommended by Bios Update program and it BRICKED my machine!"   I noticed one of those recently for my exact model of Ideapad and the BIOS version staged for me.   I intend to install it the next time it snows on Christmas Island.

From my very limited study of the changes offered for the next edition of BIOS for my Ideapad, they all offer enhancements to some features of Windows and NOTHING for Linux.  I dual boot into Fedora, and only boot into Windows to run the Lenovo VANTAGE hardware scans once every 18 Months.  Fedora's next release will change the disk format, so I'll need to reinstall.  I think I'll take my statement above to heart and completely remove Windows then.

Have you heard of booting into linux, using a virtual box program to start an instance of Windows, then installing the BIOS from the Windows 10 Virtual machine?  A virtual box program is available here:  https://go.oracle.com/LP=87691?elqCampaignId=49449&src1=ad:pas:go:dg:virt&src2=wwmk200609p00103c0001&SC=sckw=WWMK200609P00103C0001&mkwid=%7cpmt%7ce%7cpdv%7cc%7c&GOOGLE&download+vbox&EAIaIQobChMIos-C66ay7AIVkcDACh26lw1UEAAYASAAEgLVdPD_BwE&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIos-C66ay7AIVkcDACh26lw1UEAAYASAAEgLVdPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Sincerely,

Yup. Being a sysadmin I deal with virtualization on a daily basis(vSphere specially). I don't find safe to trust virtualization to such critical tasks as firmware upgrades.

And as far as my knowledge goes, I don't think that a Virtual Machine have access to any Firmware(BIOS/UEFI) or ESP(EFI partition) since those assets are abstracted by the virtualization layer and not mapped directly to real hardware. Exceptions are usb passthrough, pci passthrough, raw disk mappings, etc

It would be a hell of a security nightmare if ALL firmware got exposed to virtual machines, don't you think?

All the best.
