Camera isn't working

Lenovo S340-15IWL Touch Laptop (Ideapad) Type 81QF

  • Camera app shows a black window, no led on
  • F8 key bound to camera; when pressed it shows the camera-off symbol with the line through it. Pressing it again still shows the camera-off symbol again, but shouldn’t it alternate between off and on, line and no line?
  • Zoom shows the camera not available, only audio.
  • Zoom camera settings shows Integrated Camera flashing on an off, as if it is only available to Zoom for half of every second. Sometimes it is on long enough to get a glimpse of one’s face in the webcam.
  • Lenovo Vantage camera settings always shows the camera is in use by another program
  • Tried privacy settings
  • Tried Zoom settings
  • Tried Lenovo Vantage privacy settings
  • Tried adding Zoom to antivirus exceptions
  • Tried adding Zoom to firewall exceptions
  • Tried updating drivers, rolling back drivers, restoring to original drivers
  • Tried turning off access to the camera in Privacy Settings for everything except Zoom
  • Tried common regedit fix: adding Dword “EnableFrameServerMode” =0 at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform and at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform, didn’t make a difference so I reversed the changes
  • Tried to find what other program is using the camera using Process Explorer, searched for the camera’s Physical Device Object name, only thing using it is Windows Camera Frame Server via svchost.exe
  • Tried restoring Windows Camera Frame Server to original settings

Any help would be very kindly appreciated. I am trying to help my mother who uses Zoom for work and has gone into repair shops with her laptop multiple times with no results.

Welcome to the Community Forums


Please try the following steps:


Step 1. Reset the Camera in App Settings.
- Right click the Start Menu bottom left and select "Settings"
- Click on "Apps & Features" , then in the search field above the list type "Camera"
- Click the Camera and select "Advanced Options"
- Scroll down until you see "Reset" and click the "Reset" button.


Step 2. Troubleshoot Windows Store Apps
- Right click the Start Menu bottom left and select "Settings"
- Click on "Update & Security" and select "Troubleshoot" from the list on the left.
- Select "Additional troubleshooters"
- Scroll down to the bottom and select "Windows Store Apps", click it and select "Run the troubleshooter"


Step 3. Uninstall Camera Device + Drivers.
- Press the Windows key+X , select "Device Manager"
- Under "Cameras" and/or "Imaging devices" - Select the device in question, right click and select "Uninstall Device"
- If prompted to uninstall drivers associated with the device, tick the box and continue.
- Perform a restart of the computer to have Windows install the most generic drivers for this device.
- Now double check the privacy settings and the app access to your camera as described above.
- You can also try using webcamtests.com to check for better compatible drivers for the camera.


Step 4. Disable Automatic Hardware drivers update  
- Right click the Windows Icon, select the "Search" Function.
- Type "Control Panel" and select "Small icons" or "Large Icons" in the "View By" top right.
- Click the "System Icon"
- Navigate to "Advanced System Settings" -> "Hardware"
- Click "Device Installation Settings" and Select "No"**This will prevent Windows from interfering with your hardware drivers in future updates, but keep crucial security updates rolling.

If you installed antivirus software, it would be blocked when you download the tool.

So please quit those antivirus software before you download and run the tool.
