Can i replace my dvd drive with a HDD

2021-04-29, 5:16 AM

Hi, I recently upgraded my Lenovo Z560 with a SSD and now my old HDD which still has all of my data on it is now external and i cant access it because I don't have a SATA to USB cable and that got me to thinking that my DVD drive is not working anyways so, can i replace it for a HDD. So, I went out on amazon looking for a hard drive caddy and I found a really good deal but, it clearly says please check the compatibility for my laptop to see if it supports replacing the DVD drive with a HDD. So, I am here to see if that is possible. Please help. Thanks!

You can check the part number of the hard drive and whether it is compatible with your computer.

Hi Chamy,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Thanks for the initiative to create a post in the board. Please share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

The machine type model / MTM consists of more than four characters.

Update us soon as convenient.

I checked the label on the device. I have the MO number to be CB01042817 and S/N numer to be CB07634374 and Model name 0914. Is this helpful?

Hi Chamy,

ODD caddy is not offered for the Z560 by OEM but it may be possible to get a3rd party ODD caddy to enclose the HDD and use it as replacement for the ODD.

Hi, I was looking for a 3rd party ODD caddy in the first place but, I wasn't sure that particular product will be compatible with my laptop. Here is the link to the caddy I found

https://www.amazon.in/gp/product/B00NJN55KA/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3FPNGXJ2Z95CC&psc=1.

I want to know if this particular product will be compatible with my laptop.

Hello,

Lenovo knows nothing about the proposed bracket from a third party.   I looked into the web page and the information there is quite complete.   It is your responsibility to assure yourself of business terms directly with the third party.   Often a fitment database is available, contact the third party and ask if it will fit into your machine model.  And also confirm what happens if after it arrives you discover it does not fit.   (I purchased a device from a third party once, it was quite inexpensive, and then discovered the payment for return shipment  to the mailman and restocking fee to the vendor was more than the purchase price, so I simply recycled it.)   Find out these details before you make your purchase decision.

Also remember optical disk drives are older technology, and were developed using SATA 1.0 communication protocols, and have not in general been adapted to the faster 2.0 or 3.0 standards.   Your laptop may NOT be equipped to access the HDD at speeds faster than SATA 1.0.  Even though the normal slot for HDD does support modern high speeds.   Placing the HDD within an external enclosure and using USB port to access it might result in faster speeds, especially if your computer has USB 3.0 technology.  A powered USB Hub could also be used.

Good Luck,

Usedtoerich

I am 100% sure the caddy would fit and my HDD does always run at 70MB/s So, having speeds of SATA 1 is fine. I simply don't want to have an external HDD due to the fragilness of HDDs

Hi, I still haven't made up my mind yet to buy the caddy because I still am not sure if the Z560 has a 12.7mm drive or 9mm drive. I need to know this because the caddy has to be the same size as well. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
