Can't update BIOS on ideapad 720S-13ARR

2018-05-29, 19:44 PM

Tried updating to version 6KCN38WW, but I get an error saying "Your On Board BIOS is for OS Version 15063 only, can't update current new BIOS." My Windows 10 version is 15063, so I don't know why this error is showing up.

Also tried running Windows update to 16299, and I still see the same error when trying to update the BIOS.

Any solution to this issue?

Not sure which BIOS version you presently have, but the notice below is from the 6KCN38WW readme.txt

Important notice: ######################################################################################################################################################## 1,If your current system BIOS is greater than or equal to V37 Please don't back flash BIOS to V29,V28,V27,Ohterwise that will cause system can't power on issue 2,Due to security reason if your current system BIOS is less than or equal to v29 that will not support update BIOS to V38, and will be keep BIOS V29 awlays which shipment with RS2 preload. 3,Due to security reason BIOS will not support back flash function since BIOS 6KCN37WW release(e.g:BIOS V38 cannot back flash to V37) #########################################################################################################################################################

That cant be an End all. Some of us are having graphics stability issues and the updated graphics drivers arent stable with the V29 BIOS. So that means we are just stuck with an unstable laptop indefinitely? I ran into the same BIOS update issue by the way, talking with support now. Ill get back once i have a solution.

Yeah, I am not sure why or what that message means since it is not written very well in the Readme.     I cannot imagine that you would be stuck on v29 though, but perhaps v38 is having problems updating from v29..     I know that v37 bricked alot of 720s systems, so they may have an issue.

You might check the last post in this thread, as they mention a work around for the video issue.

Hi,

Read this thread https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-1xx-3xx-5xx-7xx/IdeaPad-720s-13ARR-if-the-bios-won-t-be-updated-anymore/td-p/4094640?page=10

The solution part is on page 10 although I recommend reading the complete thread.

I've successfully updated my laptop from v28 to v44.

With version 28 I had an annoying message in Linux logs every 2s and the new version fixed that. Maybe v30 would have fixed that but I wanted to be on the most current branch.

Anyway, the procedure is not for the faint of heart but it works (at least it worked for me) and the files come from Lenovo.

I think it's like this because of structure change and also because it has to move the WIN10 OEM Keys from the old bios structure to the new one.

I would say this is the main reason why Lenovo didn't make it available as usual and decided to go the 2 version path.

Nevertheless, it can break you computer so use it at your own risk.
