Cannot connect to internet with new IdeaPad

2020-09-19, 0:53 AM

I recently purchased a IdeaPad slim 81VS and am unable to connect to the internet. I use Spectrum with a modem, through an ethernet cable (through an USB adapter). The computer does not show my network no matter what I do. How do I get the computer to show/connect, please?

Step one would be to plug in your USB Ethernet adapter (what brand/model of USB Ethernet adapter do you have?) and make sure it shows up in Device Manager

  • Right-click on Start and select Device Manager
  • Once in Device Manager, expand the Network Adapters section with a left click), and make sure your USB Ethernet Adapter is listed
  • If listed, right-click on your USB Ethernet adapter, select Properties, and under the General tab make sure it says that "Your Device is working properly" and under the Drivers tab note the version and date of the driver currently installed.

A Ipconfig output would be helpful

  • Right-click on Start and select Windows PowerShell (Admin)
  • At the Windows PowerShell prompt type:   ipconfig /all     and press Enter

The command will list out a bunch of data, but the information to look will be under a section titled "Ethernet adapter, where the Ethernet adapter Ethernet 2:

Sample Output

  Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :

  Description . . . . . . . . . . . : <name of your USB Ethernet Adapter>

  Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-12-3B-4B-A1-A5

  DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No

  Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes

  Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::b827:5b47:a6d3:6a12%13(Preferred)

  IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.124(Preferred)

  Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

  Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

  DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 973083451

  DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-22-7A-87-03-C4-8E-8F-A9-50-9B

  DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 8.8.8.8

                                      8.8.4.4

  NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

Important entries in above output

Description . . . . . . . . . . . :   Should match your USB Ethernet Adapter

DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Should be set to Yes so your IPv4 Address can be automatically assigned by your Spectrum Modem/Router

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . .  IPv4 address assigned to your laptop

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : Normally is set to 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : Should be the IP Address of your Sectrum Modem

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : Usually set by your ISP  (The ones in the example above are statically set to Google's public DNS)

Does Spectrum supply a wireless router, and if so does you laptop connect wirelessly?

Cheers,

Thank you for the reply. I checked and my adapter is listed and says it's working. Its a "USB 3.0 ethernet adapter 1136". The computer wouldn't let me open the PowerShell (it says "not available"). I'm not sure about the wireless. On my granddaughter's computer the network shows up under wi-fi but she has an ethernet cable attached to her computer from the router like I have to this new computer so I don't think its connecting wirelessly.

- What is the brand name/model of the USB Ethernet adapter you bought?

You can also run the ipconfig /all command from a Command Prompt

> Left-click Start and type:   command prompt   Click on Command Prompt from the top of the search results, and then in the Command Prompt window type:   ipconfig /all   and press Enter

If your granddaughter's laptop can see the WiFi Network, then your laptop should also be able to connect to it as well by clicking on the WiFi icon in the lower left corner of your laptop's screen.

The icon looks like the one circled in blue in the image below, but it may be hidden, so you may have to hit the up arrow circled in red to see it.

After clicking on the WiFi icon, is should give you a list of available Wireless Networks.   Typically your Spectrum modem will have the name and default password of your wireless network listed on a stick affixed to the modem itself.

Cheers,

Thank you for the reply.

This is the adapter I have: https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/cables-and-adapters/adapters/CABLE-BO-USB-3-0-to-Ethernet/p/4X90S91830?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIxfTan7r46wIVhMDACh1qHA9WEAQYASABEgI48_D_BwE&cid=us:sem|se|google|ca+shopping+non-brand+non-intel+troas|gs_accessories||4X90S91830|6548549656|76751675217|aud-482721124310:pla-430425440147|shopping|non-brand&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMIxfTan7r46wIVhMDACh1qHA9WEAQYASABEgI48_D_BwE:G:s&s_kwcid=AL!4030!3!385397270858!!!g!430425440147!!6548549656!76751675217&gclsrc=aw.ds

The settings all show the adapter is working properly. When I click on the wi-fi icon, it shows all the neighbors' wi-fi but my own network doesn't appear like it does on my granddaughter's computer. I tried "troubleshooting" but all it says is "you have chosen to not connect to an available network".
