Critcal BIOS update needed, but then it says not for my machine (320 171KB)...?

2020-01-23, 22:35 PM

Lenovo Vantage says that I should do a critical BIOS update, but when I go to install it, it says

"1. This package is built for Lenovo ideapad S145-14/15IWL/340C-15IWL only, do not try it on other machines."

My machine is a 320-171KB -  not one of the those listed.

So, obviously I don't do the update.

But Vantage keeps telling me to do the update.

What to do??

Any advice appriciated.

I have the same problem.  I also have an Ideapad 320 - 171LB machine, but this "critical update" for Bios started showing up on my laptop on 1/23/2020 (today), but the warning during installation is telling me it is for a different system, so I aborted install, and Vantage is continuing to tell me that I need to do the update to the BIOS as a critical update.

Doesn't really make sense when the BIOS doesn't match my machine type.

I agree -- what to do about an update that isn't appropriate for a laptop when Vantage continues to nag me to do the update?

Hi All,

Welcome to Community Forums!

Depending on the version of the BIOS that it wants to install, this message normally occur if the said version of BIOS that is available is also applicable to other models.

Check the version of the BIOS that the Lenovo Vantage wants to install, and compare it to the one available in the Support Site.

Just key in the serial number then search. Go to Drivers and Software > Manual Update > BIOS/UEFI.

You can check the compatible models for the BIOS update by downloading the Read Me option.

You can also check this article on how to check for the BIOS version on your computer: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht070218

If it's the same version, then you can proceed with the installation.

Update us on how it goes.

Regards

Malvin_Lenovo

,  I did what you suggested, and the update numbers match. Website says it's necessary, numbers match, it should be fine, right? EXCEPT that:

1) the website and Vantage both say it should be installed on the 320-171 AND,

2) the actual file, once we download it and install it, pops up the disclaimer that says it's for 2 other systems and should NOT be installed on any other system AND

3) at least one other user posted (in a separate thread I found when trying to see whether the update really was for my Ideapad 320-171) that after he downloaded and installed the update, the HDMI functionality on his 320 system did not work---the only fix was to UNINSTALL the most current update, and reinstall the 45 update released months and months ago, that specifically says it's for the 320 systems in the warning.

Please advise--if this update is meant for all systems, including the Ideapad 320 variations, the file should say so, and  it should not break functionality when installed. We're all more than a bit confused, and do not want to install updates (however 'critical' they may be labeled) if they are not in fact for our computers. . . . If this is so critical, why isn't it for our systems, and why does it impair them when installed??

Malvin_lenovo,

The Read Me file does say that it's for my machine, and the BIOS number is similar (current one is 4WCN43WW where the one that Vantage wants to install has 4WCN46WW). But another post on this forum by 'hhanke' describes the problems he had with version 46 on my exact machine, and he was advised by Lenovo support to go back to Version 45.

I didn't update to version 45 last year for the very reason I have not done the update now - the install screen says it is not for my machine.

What difference does the BIOS update make? how important is it?

Can you assure me it's right to do it?

thanks in advance for your help

PS: please feedback to the power that be in Lenovo that customers not happy with conflicting information.

Hi ,

Thanks for replying.

The advantages of updating your BIOS are:

  • The overall performance of your computer improves
  • Compatibility issues are treated
  • Booting time is shorten

Through BIOS updating, your OS is supplemented by the way it's finding your personal computers hardware elements and your OS recognizes it's real usage.

You should only update your BIOS if the new version contains an improvement you need. Be sure to check the change log for the BIOS updates and see if they actually have an update you require. (You can check it under Read Me option on the download page of the  Support Site)

Hope this helps with your query.

Regards

Thanks for the response Melvin_lenovo.

The performance is rubbish and so's the boot time, but then it always has been, I wish I'd sent it back when I first bought it. But I didn't so here we are.

I note that you did not assure me that this update was applicable to my machine - so I can only assume that you are as uncertain as I am and it may not be suitable.

Reading more posts on the forum I see the trouble caused by BIOS updates.  As I don't enjoy fooking with computers, nor do I have the time to, I'll therefore have to give this update a miss and risk continuing to have rubbish performance, rather than risk having a laptop that doesn't work at all.

This BIOS malarkey along with the rubbish laptop performance have convinced me to steer well clear of Lenovo in future.

Regards

Glenda

We have been longtime users of Thinkpads and now Lenovo.

When IBM owned these laptops/notepads, we never had an issue like this "Critical BIOS" update.

From the posts above, it looks like this update could seriously affect our ideapad 320's, thus we will not be installing it.

The poor support from your representative; malvin_lenovo Support Specialist, is not satisfactory.

Next time we will be purchasing laptops, we will seriously evaluate your competition.
