Hi there Ekulo,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Do you have a FN key on your keyboard ?

The hotkeys share the same buttons as the function keys.

To use the hotkeys (brightness, volume, microphone on/off, camera on/off etc) press down the FN key on your keyboard then press the hotkey you want to use.

This can be reverted in the BIOS.

- Press the power button to completely shut down the unit.

- Press the Novo Button (Novo Hole) The button can be reached/clicked by an unfolded paperclip or similar.

- Choose the BIOS setup and navigate to the "Configuration" tab

- Locate "Hotkey mode" and set it to "Enabled"

- Go to the "Exit" tab and press "Exit Saving Changes" or press F10

HotKey Mode Enabled =  Pressing the hotkeys directly, but having to use FN+key to utilize the functions (like F11 making browsers/windows fullscreen)

HotKey Mode Disabled = Pressing the function keys directly, but having to use FN+key to utilize the hotkeys (Volume up, brightness down etc)

Hope this helps

Regards

Voithos

Thanks Voithos but it does not work... all other functions are working except for the MIC. And these do not require using FN+ they are the preset ones.

Re:F4 Microphone BUTTON stopped working

Hi again Ekulo,

Ok, so it is not the button that is not functioning, it's just that the microphone is not working ?

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to remedy the issue:

Step 1 Manually Updating Microphone device

- Press the Windows key + X and select "Device Manager"

- Expand "Audio Input and Output"

- Right click the "Microphone"

- Select "Update Drivers"

- Select "Browse my computer for driver software"

- Select "Pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"

- Select the newest microphone related drivers for the device.

Step 1.2 Uninstall Microphone Device + Drivers.

- Press the Windows key+X , select "Device Manager"

- Under "Audio Inputs and Outpits" - Select the device in question, right click and select "Uninstall Device"

- If prompted to uninstall drivers associated with the device, tick the box and continue.

- Perform a restart of the computer to have Windows install the most generic drivers for this device.

Step 2. Check your antivirus software

In your antivirus software settings, look for settings that block access to your microphone or permission to use your Mic. For help, visit your antivirus software company’s website.

Step 3. Microphone Settings.

- In the search function, type "Sound Settings".

- Under the Microphone, tap "Device Properties"

- Then Select "Additional device properties" on the right.

- Navigate to the "Advanced" tab and uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" if applicable, or turn it on if it is off.(Some programs require it to be on).

- Navigate to the "Enhancement" tab and un-check the box "Enable all enhancements"

Step 4. Rolling back to a previous Win 10 Version :

- Open the Windows 10 Settings Menu by clicking the gear icon in the Windows Start menu, or by pressing “Windows+I” keys.

- Click “Update & security”

- Click the “Recovery” tab on the sidebar.

- Under “Go back to the previous version of Windows 10,” click “Get started.”

- If this is not available, then there should always be a "restore point" you can choose from "System Recovery"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Click the Windows key and type "System Recovery" and click "Recovery" in the list.

- Select "Open System Restore" - Click "Next" and select the latest "Restore point" where the device was working.

**Note: System Restore Points will only remove Apps and Programs installed after the selected Restore Point date. It will not remove word/text files or pictures etc.

Step 5. Disable Automatic Hardware drivers update

- Right click the Windows Icon, select the "Search" Function.

- Type "Control Panel" and select "Small icons" or "Large Icons" in the "View By" top right.

- Click the "System Icon"

- Navigate to "Advanced System Settings" -> "Hardware"

- Click "Device Installation Settings" and Select "No"

**This will prevent Windows from interfering with your hardware drivers in future updates, but keep crucial security updates rolling.

In the unlikely event that this does not solve the issue, we will have to perform a factory reset of the device.

Step 5. OKR - One Key Recovery

**This is a complete factory reset of the computer

**Loss of data can occur, so we advise you to backup your data if possible.

- Press the Novo Button The button can be reached by the use of a unfolded paperclip or similar

- Select System recovery and follow the recovery process.

- When back in Windows, perform "Step 5" above then download and install the newest drivers for your device as provided above.

- Recheck privacy settings and app access.

Regards

Voithos

Re:F4 Microphone BUTTON stopped working

Hi Voithos, sorry if I wasn't clear. The microphone working, but I cannot turn it on/off using the keyboard button F4.

To be clear, I use FN+ to access the functions F1, F2....etc in softwared. The functioned drawn on these keys are accessed with a simple click. for instance I am able to turn the speakers on/mute with F1 and it works. Same with all other functions (refresh, airplance mode, volume etc...) The only key that stopped working is the MIC on/off... like this was deactivated.

In that case, please do make sure you have the latest Windows update installed as other similar issues have reported this resolving the issue.

Do also make sure you have the newest driver updates for your microphone, keyboard and system board (Chispet, Serial I.O, MEI drivers) etc.

Did you find a way to make it work eventually?

Mine stopped working on both my Lenovos after a Windows or a Lenovo update at some point. So I'm sure an update did it for both devices.

Mine has also stopped working after an update, along with my camera one, F8 and flight mode, F7.

All of my other hotkeys work and I have restarted my laptop and turned the hotkeys off and on using the BIOS, configure suggestion above.

Also as it's happened when my camera is off, I'm now unsure how to turn it back on again...

Re:F4 Microphone BUTTON stopped working

Hi.

I'm not sure the detail but it's clear that any keyboard/touchpad has its own device driver and some kind of system service to support special function keys.

(In case of some cheap PC I used, FN lock key crashes Win10 (BSOD or immediate power off) on the spot because it has no device driver and BIOS support for keyboard.)

So, could you check

  • BIOS version
  • Keyboard/touchpad device driver
  • Lenovo Utility version (this installs keyboard service to PC)

Sincerely

Just a common IdeaPad Flex5 (14ARE05) user

Same issue here.  Started after I installed Lenovo updates yesterday.   Hoping Lenovo is monitoring this and will provide a fix ASAP.
